The Medieval city of Mons is a Walloon city. Although not the largest city, it has seen its fair share of important moments of history. Early settlements in the area date back to at the times of Julius Caesar arriving with his army in the 1st century BC. By the industrial revolution, Mons was a heavy industry city producing a lot of coal. It was also said that the final shots of the First World War were fired here. As the city was liberated on 11 November 1918; a placard on city hall commemorates this fact. Mons is an old city with many medieval structures and lots of Gothic architecture. The “Grand Place” is the center of the historic town and in it, lies the city hall which was built in the 15th century. Make sure to visit the monkey statue in front- patting its head is said to bring good luck! The Belfry was built in the 17th century and is oddly the only Baroque-style building in Belgium.
