This is a great spot if you want a change of pace from the busy pace of Las Vegas. Don’t be fooled though. Jean, Nevada has a lot more to offer than just alternative casinos. Here are six of the best things you should do in Jean, Nevada!

1. Seven Magic Mountain

The first thing on our list might sound a little odd at first, but don’t be alarmed. Seven Magic Mountains is a large-scale public art installation that’s located near Jean, Nevada. It’s about 16 km (10 mi) south of Las Vegas. The art installation belongs to internationally renowned Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone. It’s made up of seven towers of colorful, stacked boulders, that stand at about 30 feet (9.1 meters) high. You can find this display within the Ivanpah Valley and it is meant to portray the “creative expression of human presence in the desert”.

It’s a pretty interesting thing to see in the middle of the desert. When you visit, you’ll be greeted with a bright display of color, in the middle of a bleak environment. The colors really make the environment “pop” and it’s worth a look if you’re in the area. Just don’t try to climb the art when you’re there!

Seven Magic Mountains

To make the most of this free art installation right outside of Las Vegas, bring lunch to enjoy the scenery for a while longer. Photography tips for the Seven Magic Mountains:

1) Get there early! The morning hours have the least crowds.

2) Look up the colors of the stones ahead of time and plan a look! I wore bright yellow and my husband wore bright blue. I’ve seen some really cool rainbow outfits others have worn too.

3) Bring the tripod, the DSLR, and the chargers! You can spend as much time here as you want, so stay a while and get creative.

4) Be polite and take turns. Everyone there was so nice; families, couples, and groups all took turns with the stones. Take a few shots and walk away for a bit to give others a chance.

5) Say no to photo prop people. Someone we saw was charging for pictures with a snake! These are unnecessary. The exhibit is free, so just skip the animal pics.

For some gambling fun, take a gander around Primm Valley Resort & Casino, just a short drive out of Jean. You can choose to stay here, too, if you’re in the area and looking for affordable accommodation, but don’t expect much from their rooms. While they’ll serve the purpose, they’re relatively dated (but clean and well-maintained). The real hook is all of the gambling opportunities one can have at this casino!

You have a choice of up to 3,000 slots, video poker and keno machines. There are also all of the standard casino games, like blackjack, roulette, and craps. If you prefer live poker, you can always head over to Buffalo Bill’s Poker Room, for some poker action. If gambling isn’t your speed and you’d prefer a relaxing day of golf, the resort also has a course, for you to hit some hole-in-ones.

5. Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area

Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area is the best place to be if you want an outdoor experience without straying too far off the beaten path. One of its main hooks is the presence of petroglyphs in the area. There are large amounts of petroglyphs around the trail that you can see (no touching though). It’s a great walk that isn’t too taxing, but it allows you an opportunity to go outside and experience nature and history in a different way.

Parking is easy in this area. We’d recommend you look for Nawghaw Poa Road to get here, as that address is the most direct one. Saturday mornings have guided tours and the park rangers are very helpful in guiding you on which trail to take. The Canyon Trail is the one you should take if you want to see the petroglyphs!

6. Evolution Expeditions

Evolution Expeditions is another thrilling adventure-seeking activity you can do to get away from the casino scene. Evolution Expeditions provides the tools you need to kayak, wakeboard, and enjoy a day in the water! Out of all of these things, their kayaking excursions are one of the main draws. For the kayaking excursion, you start at Hoover Dam and snake your way through the Colorado River. The guides ease you through the process and soon you’re paddling like you belong on the kayak.

The experience is wonderful, as the scenery is gorgeous and you get to partake in a physical activity that will leave you feeling like you’ve accomplished something at the very end. The excursion is about 19 km (12 mi), so we’d recommend thinking twice before bringing kids younger than 12 along. They provide lunch and all you’ll need to kayak. Make sure you bring some sunscreen and water since you’ll be under the sun! Other than that, it’s a great experience and something you should try!
