Edinburgh remains as the top tourist draw in all of Scotland. While Glasgow has become a tourist destination on its own, the capital city still stands tall and proud with its numerous historical and modern sites to visit. Blessed with a rich history and centuries-old architecture, the city is a smorgasbord of tourist destinations that date back to the medieval times. Leading the list is The Old Town where Edinburgh Castle and a number of century’s old buildings are bordered by unmatched masonry of alleys and walls. On the other hand, The New Town, built between 1767 and 1850, is a picture perfect example of what city-planning should be. Both of these areas have been declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you want to learn more about the city’s historical sites, then planning a visit is a must. To help you make your vacation here more comfortable, read through our list of castle hotels in Edinburgh and pick one that you want to stay at.

Edinburgh is hands-down my favorite foreign city, with its incredible Gothic architecture and its winding cobblestone streets. It's the perfect city if you like cozy coffee shops, a historic Old Town, fewer crowds, and castles, of course! I suggest that you visit between March and May to avoid the crowds. And to make the most of your stay in this city, check out my recommendations:
- Circus Lane: This place features pastel homes and an adorable winding cobblestone street.
- Calton Hill: Here, you can get an unreal view of all of Edinburgh from above.
- The Mound: This is the spot to visit if you’re a lover of Gothic architecture.
- The Vennel: This is a famous viewpoint at Edinburgh Castle — and for good reason!
- Grassmarket: The views of Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket neighborhood were definitely my favorite in the city.
