Are you travelling through Central Thailand and looking for somewhere to go for a relaxing day out? Whether you want somewhere to take the kids, are seeking a place that can be quite romantic (in the right company!), or want somewhere to chill out with your friends, Chai Nat Bird Park may be ideal.

Located in the Thai province of Chai Nat (sometimes also spelt as Chainat), get up close and personal with an array of colourful feathered friends, visit the small onsite museums, enjoy the lovely gardens and grounds, and even more! Plan to spend at least half a day enjoying the varied attractions and activities within Chai Nat Bird Park.

Observe many colourful birds of all sizes

Unsurprisingly, Chai Nat Bird Park is home to many, many birds. There are some, such as peacocks, that wander freely around the grounds, as well as small wild birds that flit about at will. There are numerous species of birds in large cages, including parrots, cockatoos, hornbills, chickens, and lovebirds. Larger birds, like ostriches and storks, are in fenced areas, and you can wander past small ponds, filled with wading and water birds.

See even more birds in the large aviary

Step inside the enormous walk-through aviary and be right in the midst of even more types of bird. There are those, like pretty pink flamingos, that congregate around the waters of a large pond, some that scuttle across the ground and through the dense undergrowth, and others that prefer to be high in the towering treetops. There are ground-level paths and raised wooden walkways to explore, allowing you optimum viewing of the many birds that call the aviary home. There are more than 100 species of bird living in an attractive natural environment.

The aviary at Chai Nat Bird Park is marketed as the biggest aviary in Asia. Whether this is, indeed, fact, or just a hopeful aspiration, it certainly is big and impressive. Covering 26 rai (4.2 hectares / 10.3 acres), you won’t be short of things to look at.

Relax next to the largest pond

At the heart of the park is a huge pond with a giant eagle statue on a small green island at the centre. Rent a small peddle boat and have fun on the water, or sit at one of the benches positioned around the edges. The pond is filled with fish, and you can buy a bag of food to throw to the awaiting gaping mouths.

Walk around to the back of the pond and you will find a lovely man-made waterfall tumbling over the rocks. Despite the somewhat large crowds of eager visitors, Chai Nat Bird Park still manages to feel quite peaceful and relaxed.

Admire the statues in the attractive gardens

The extensive nicely-landscaped gardens are brimming with bright, fragrant flowers, leafy bushes, perfectly-sculpted topiaries, and interesting statues of birds and other creatures. There are definitely lots of great photo opportunities! Snuggle up to a mother duck with her hatchlings, stand underneath two giant humming bird statues as they sip nectar from giant flowers, and snap a selfie with enormous hornbills perched on top of tree trunks. Perhaps the best photo opportunity, however, is when you clamber into a giant bird cage and sit down like a canary.

Visit the small onsite museums and other attractions

Learn more about a bird’s life cycle in the egg museum, and feel how heavy some eggs are – you might well be surprised! There are large displays of dinosaurs, a small petting zoo, which is perfect for younger visitors, and a small space museum / planetarium. Kids can cool off in the shallow pool and have heaps of fun on the large transformer-like slide.

Go from feathers to gills with a visit to the cool aquarium. It’s filled with an assortment of aquatic creatures, including fish, starfish, and crabs, as well as fishing equipment, such as nets and traditional wicker fish traps. The onsite shop sells a wide selection of reasonably priced souvenirs, including t-shirts, bird ornaments, and knickknacks. Snacks and drinks are widely available around the park.
