6. Porvoo Old Town Christmas Market

Porvoo is a charming and beautiful town that is a one-hour drive away from the capital of Helsinki. This medieval city is particularly pretty during the holiday season when Old Town is dressed up in style. The well-preserved, colorful wooden houses are decorated for Christmas, while the narrow, cobblestone streets are filled with lights. When it snows here, kick sleds are the best mode of transport. The frozen river becomes an ice rink for skaters, and stalls are set up selling arts and crafts by the art community in the town. Vendors dress up in old-fashioned costumes while selling gifts and tasty food products. Porvoo Art Factory joins in the festivities, with contemporary art on display.

Turku is a two-hour drive from Helsinki and, every year on December 24, an event declares The Christmas Peace in the city’s Old Great Square, which is considered to be the Christmas city of Finland. This has been going on since the 1320s and is one of the country’s oldest Christmas traditions. A market is held here, which runs for four weekends before Christmas. A huge Christmas tree is set up in front of Turku Cathedral. The official Christmas street of Turku, Yliopistonkatu, is festooned with garlands of light. Stalls offer traditional and high-quality, handicrafts, gifts, toys, and tasty treats. Music, circus, and theater performances are also held here.
