The former Rex Café was bought by the Lopez couple in 1998 and it was reborn as El Gusto Del Pueblo serving authentic Mexican dishes. Texas Monthly magazine awarded the restaurant with five stars for serving traditional Mexican dishes made from the freshest ingredients based on recipes sourced from Yucatan, Monterey, Puebla, and Vera Cruz. They take pride in their signature salsa made from three varieties of peppers and in their homemade flour tortillas and tamales. Galveston County Daily News voted their breakfast burritos as the best in the county. Another crowd favorite is the Huevos Rancheros which is bacon and potatoes topped with pork chops, eggs, and Ranchero sauce.

This restaurant has been serving traditional Tex-Mex cuisine since 1916 and voted as having the best Mexican food from the years 2012 to 2017 (except for 2016) and the best Margaritas in 2012. It is located in the historic district with lots of parking for your guests if you are planning to have a huge event or party in the restaurant. They have two spacious floors of dining areas ideal for business meetings, casual dining, special events, and a full bar offering daily happy hour to complete a memorable night out in town. They also offer full catering services, a to-go menu, and a special menu for kids called Los Ninos. On the menu are their famous fajitas, vegetarian platillos, nachos, combinaciones, enchiladas, sopas y ensaladas, antojitos, platillos, and original specials (especialidades del original).

In English, the restaurant’s name means “a convenience store and a store selling tacos”. It’s a grocery store that sells all the basic ingredients in making a taco from the tortillas, different kinds of sauces, cheese, to the fresh veggies and meats that goes with it. Buy these off the shelf and make your own tacos at home. The establishment also sells other snacks and Mexican delicacies like chicharron or fried strips of pig skin which is sold by the pound. There is a small seating area in the grocery where you can sit down, order and eat their house specialties like tacos, burritos, and quesadillas for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a no-frills environment.

Los Lazos is a family-owned restaurant serving authentic Mexican dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Years of tradition have honed their heirloom recipes into perfection which the present generations enjoy today. Their house specialties are Taquitos Chilangos (Mexican small tortillas), El Supremo (the Supreme), and Compadres y Comadres (Godfathers and Godmothers). On Tuesdays, they serve Carne Guisada (sautéed meat) for $9.99 and on Wednesdays, homemade tortillas with Carne de Puerco con verdolagas (pork with purslane). On Fridays, the restaurant becomes very festive with their Karaoke nights.
