This city, in Tuscany, sits at the foot of Monte Retaia and is famous for its contributions to the textile industry. It is also known for its Biscotti di Prato, otherwise known as Cantucci. Make sure you get the most out of your stay, by checking in at one of these places:
Tip from tour guide
Before you book accommodation in Prato, read this to learn more about the city and comune.
Prato is a vibrant, welcoming city whose historic center has undergone a great revival in recent years with the emergence of many trendy bars, entertainment venues, and modernized museums.
Here are some attractions you can visit while in this city:
1. Prato Cathedral - Coming from the train station or from the parking lot in Piazza Mercatale, one of the first things to see is the Duomo, or St. Stephen's Cathedral, or Prato Cathedral. It preserves important artistic works, such as the splendid frescoes by Filippo Lippi and Paolo Uccello.
2. Palazzo Pretorio - Built in the 13th century, this palace houses the Civic Museum today. I recommend visiting the museum. It hosts some important artwork from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. 3. Emperor's Castle - This castle allows free admission and it's very interesting to climb the walls. 4. Santa Maria delle Carceri - This church is located next to the castle mentioned above. It has an original Greek-cross plan, designed by the Renaissance architect, Giuliano da Sangallo. 5. Textile Museum - Just a few steps from Emperor's Castle, the museum is one of Europe's largest institutions dedicated to the appreciation of ancient and contemporary textiles. 6. City walls of Prato - Take a look at the city walls, built from 1300 onward. They surround the center of the town almost completely. 7. Chiesa di San Francesco - This church is currently under restoration. Before entering, you can observe the facade, which has a beautiful relief at the top of St. Francis. 8. Centro Pecci - If you have a car, I recommend you pay a visit to Centro Pecci. It's one of the most important spaces dedicated to modern art in Tuscany. Its appearance from the outside is striking for its originality. Aside from exploring these attractions, you can try some local food during your stay. The famous cantuccini biscuits come from Prato. Taste them with Vin Santo! You can also try sedani alla pratese, which is celery stuffed with veal, mortadella, eggs, and garlic, baked or fried. As for transportation, Prato is very well-connected by train. Just get off at Porta al Serraglio to be close to the Duomo.

Tip from tour guide
For a breath of fresh air during your stay, take an 11-minute drive to Cascine di Tavola. It's a huge park between Poggio a Caiano and Prato, 20 km (12.4 mi) away from Florence. It was born after Lorenzo the Magnificent's purchase, in 1470, of the area on which the Villa at Poggio a Caiano was successively built. In 1477, he gave the farm the form of a Renaissance model farm where quality products (such as honey and silk) were produced and prime livestock was raised. Some exotic hunting animals, such as peacocks, Spanish rabbits, and white deer, also frequented the park.
Under the grand duchy of Francesco I de' Medici, the farm increased its functions in the study of new cultivation systems to the point of becoming one of the first rice plantations in Italy at that time! The farm has been private property since the 1920s, but the park that surrounds it is open to the public and can be regularly visited. Today, it's a great place to hike, walk, bike, jog, or just relax.
