Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, is known as much for its food as it is for its natural delights. From crunchy dhuskas to the exclusively regional rugda mushrooms, this city has a fascinating food scene. Its diversity is influenced by a few things, including its sizeable tribal population and its proximity to and history with the state of Bihar. But apart from its regional food offerings, the city has also expanded to include food from all corners of India. Whether you want to enjoy dosas from the south or butter chicken from the north, Ranchi has it all.
If you’re looking for the best places to sample these delicacies, keep reading to see my picks for the top restaurants in Ranchi.
1. Kaveri Restaurant and Catering

One of the best options for vegetarians in Ranchi, Kaveri Restaurant and Catering is a beloved locally owned brand that has been around for ages. My mother would often surprise us with delicious, perfectly crisp masala dosas from here for lunch. I have so many favorites here, it’s difficult to pick just one or two, but I would definitely recommend the chilli paneer and hakka noodles here. You can also never go wrong with the crispy babycorn.

Set in Capitol Hill, Yellow Sapphire has borne witness to several celebrations in my family, including birthdays, anniversaries, and wedding receptions. The food here is always impeccable and will leave you wanting more. My favorite dishes include the melt-in-your-mouth rogan josh and delicious chicken biryani. If you’re looking for vegetarian options, do try the creamy shahi paneer. For a sweet end to your meal, I’d recommend the tiramisu or chocolate roll.

3. Moti Mahal Delux Tandoori Trail

Part of the famous Moti Mahal chain, Moti Mahal Delux Tandoori Trail in Ranchi lives up to its name quite nicely. Moti Mahal’s founder is known for forever changing the food scene in India with dishes such as tandoori chicken, butter chicken, and chicken pakora. In its Ranchi iteration too, the butter chicken is my go-to order and absolutely unmissable. Pair it with garlic naan for an incredible meal.

Cafe BAE is a relatively new but has gained a loyal customer base due to their variety of delicious international cuisine. If you’re here during winter, especially, I would recommend ordering their delicious vegetarian or chicken ramen for yourself and your loved ones. They’ve also recently started offering boba tea, so do try out my personal favorite, taro purple bubble tea, while you’re here.

5. Stuv's @ 1157
Editor's Note: Photo taken from the establishment's official social account
Originally known as Stuv’s Kitchen, this establishment was started during the COVID lockdown by a group of four women as a cloud kitchen. Today, Stuv’s @ 1157 has its own premises and has retained its comforting homemade quality. This is one of my favorite places to order from, and their ramen is to die for. What’s more, the establishment often organizes food festivals that draw huge crowds to its doors. So, keep an eye out for those!
Stuv's @ 1157
Address: House No. 1409, Gauri Shankar Nagar, North Office Para, Doranda, Ranchi, Jharkhand 834002
Opening hours: 11am - 7pm (daily)
6. The Breaking Bread
An ode to Ranchi’s youthful spirit, The Breaking Bread is delightful for more reasons than its punny name. It’s a great spot for brunches with friends or catch-up outings with loved ones. If you’re coming here for brunch, I’d suggest trying one of their burgers served with fries or the fluffy pancakes and maple syrup. If you’re like me and find it hard to resist desserts, you can also try one of their many cookies or donuts.
