If you do not wish to travel during peak season when attractions are too crowded to enjoy, now is the perfect time to book your vacation. Come visit the capital of Portugal on a low budget! Lying in the heart of the country, Lisbon is known as ‘the city for everyone’. Lisbon has many things to offer to all kinds of travellers: from historic architecture, to diverse street art, excellent Portuguese cuisine, and busy shopping malls. Here are some ways to visit Lisbon on a 6 EUR (Roughly 7 USD) budget.

Tip from tour guide

Did you know that all the Portuguese churches are open to the public? So you don't have to pay to enter the main buildings. The only limitations are opening hours and mass celebration schedules. Only the more private areas, like the cloister, chapter rooms choir, treasure room, etc. have an entrance fee.

1. Enjoy the top viewpoints or Miradouro

You probably have seen pictures of Lisbon with the ocean and small houses going up and down hills. Are you wondering where to find these ‘picture perfect’ views? Start writing down your to-do list in Portugal because there are several viewpoints worth seeing at least once during your stay in Lisbon. If you like exploring the city on foot, visiting all these spots within one day takes lots of effort. A solution is to hop on a tram, take a funicular ride or visit the Santa Justa Lift downtown.

2. Experience an old tram ride

Tourists to Lisbon must not miss the chance to take a ride on the famous old yellow tram. Tram number 28 is one of the oldest trams in Lisbon, going on the longest route passing through Baixa, Graça, Alfama and Estrela. These are some of the most popular districts in the city. The tram also goes through the Castelo De Sao Jorge and a couple of the viewpoints I mentioned above. A single ticket costs 3.00 EUR (roughly 3.28 USD) and can be purchased from any ticket machine or directly from the driver. I suggest buying an unlimited 24 hour pass for metro, tram and bus transportation, so you can hop on and off the public transportation.

3. Take a funicular ride

Another way to reach one of the viewpoints is by funicular. The Gloria Funicular will take you from the west side of the Avenida da Liberade to the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara. This funicular connects Lisbon’s downtown with the Bairro Alto area. Walking instead of taking the funicular is also a good way to enjoy the view and street art on the way up.

4. Enjoy street art all over the city

One of the things I love the most about Lisbon (besides the Portuguese old colourful houses) is street art. There’s graffiti artwork in many corners surrounding the narrow hilly streets. When taking a funicular up or tram ride throughout the city, you will find some of the best areas for street art in Lisbon. An area you must know for Lisbon’s street art is near the Sao Jorge Castle along the Graça Literary Walk. Murals of many Portuguese writers can be found here on the route of Tram 28. Marquês de Pombal is also a beautiful area for street art lovers. While most street art tours are expensive compared to the fact that you can see the walls for free, I recommend walking through these areas by yourself.

If you want to stay out of the busy central areas, another destination to visit is Belem - the southwestern civil parish of the municipality of Lisbon. This historic area is famous for many attractions surrounding the Jardim de Belem Park including the Belem tower, the Jeronimos Monastery, the Belem Palace and several museums. You can get here by train or tram with the normal transportation ticket.

It’s also easy to go by train to Sintra - a closeby city known for its mysterious atmosphere and the Castle of the Moors. A single train ride to Sintra costs around 2.50 EUR in total (2.74 USD).
