Grand Park Otaru is only 30 minutes by train from Sapporo and boasts an impressive panoramic view of Ishikari Bay and a yacht harbor. By being next to Otaruchikkou Station it can be said that it is the best place for sightseeing in the Otaru area. Experience the nostalgic sights of Otaru, a romantic stay at a bay area hotel, and feel the ocean breeze and the glow of the ocean from the attractive waterfront.

Be reenergized by the morning sun! A view that can only be had by staying here!

Otaru is a town of canals and hills, with many sights such as the warehouses made from stone, or red brick buildings, and the retro designs of the European style buildings. You will feel the soul of this harbor town Otaru from sea breeze and the gulls singing when you are walking this town.

Otaru is perfect for sightseeing or a date. You can definitely enjoy a lot of what they have to offer on a day trip but, there is a breath taking view if you stay a night. It’s this spectacular view of the sunrise! From the ocean view rooms at the Grand Park Otaru, you can take in the Otaru Port Marina from right in front of the rooms. Can you see the fishermen’s silhouettes that make this view look like a shadow art show? When waking up with the sunrise you can feel that this day is going to be a fruitful one.

Taste Hokkaido! Seafood rice bowls and even “Katsugen”

Breakfast is a buffet of variety in a spacious open kitchen style dining hall. It is an international menu that anyone from any country can take a liking to but there are some dishes that are local to Otaru such as their seafood laden sushi bowl “Kaisen Bara Chirashizushi” or their fresh grilled omelet is also a popular item!

You might find it hard to stop eating that extra piece of fresh seasonal fish they grill here.

You will definitely get full here, and you can wash it all down with beverages from the drink bar which stock things like “Katsugen” a fermented milk drink which can only be bought in Hokkaido, or fresh milk and juices.

A spacious and comfortable room!

All the rooms at Grand Park Otaru are more than 32sqm in space making them pretty large! The beds are wide and allow you to replenish your energy from taking in the sights of Otaru. All rooms have Wifi and internet for free which is also a perk. The seaside rooms are popular but the mountain view rooms also are impressive at night with their view of Otaru City and Mt. Tengu.

Otaru’s impressive nightscape is definitely worth checking out!

The canals of Otaru being lit up are a famous sight, but from the Grand Park Otaru you can be wowed by the lighting of the yachts and ferries which look like jewels floating in the sea. Otaru Port shows you its many faces at morning noon and night. There is a different feel to it from the nostalgic town’s atmosphere.

Also, you can take the Otaru Night View Bus from in front of the Grand Park Otaru, to one of the top three night views of Hokkaido at Mt. Tengu using the ropeway to see the “Otaru Night View”. You can also take the “Otaru Sansaku Roman Course” (Otaru romantic exploration tour) to see all the romantic nightscapes. You can get there in 35 minutes from the hotel. (during winter the service is not in operation so you can use the city buses to get there)

You can take a leisurely trip at night so it’s a chance to eat some wonderful sushi or the local delicacy of thick starchy sauce stir fried noodles (Ankake Yakisoba). Grabbing one of the sightseeing maps of Otaru from the hotel or Otaru Station is good or you can just eat at one of the restaurants in the hotel.

(you can have sushi or the stir fried noodles at the luxurious restaurants in the hotel too)

What you see at the canals of Otaru will change depending on time or season!

To grab some gifts that are unique to Otaru such as glass ware, music boxes, tasty sweets, and wine, head down to Sakaimachi Street or to the Otaru Canal area.

The beauty of Otaru is that depending on the season it will show you a different scenery in the canal areas, with the Canal Cruise which is held between April and November, or the winter’s “Otaru Yukiakari no Michi” a light festival held every year. At night the neon lights of the streets shine off of the water, and at sundown the beams from the setting sun create a fantastic mystical illusion of the warehouses. Every time you visit the canals you see a new and different view. Don’t think just because you been there before you can skip it, you will miss out if you did that.

In closing

The old and the new, Japanese and Western. Otaru is a town of opposites working in harmony. If you want to visit all that Otaru has to offer such as the Onsen facilities or the movie theater or the shopping mall, I recommend staying at the Grand Park Otaru which is located right next to them! Enjoy a satisfying hotel life on the seaside!
