The beautiful city of Stratford is situated in southwest Ontario, Canada, along the Avon River. Around the mid 20th century, when depopulation was ravaging rural areas worldwide, Tom Patterson, a journalist, thought of an idea to salvage the city. He requested a loan from his council to monetize the town’s nickname, Shakespeare’s birthplace. This movement attracted many actors, and in 1953, the Stratford Festival was established. It’s the largest of its kind. Many attractions, including the Shakespearean Gardens and many theaters that focus on Shakespearean plays, still support the town. Spending vacation here opens many opportunities for having fun, including activities like shopping, picnicking, checking out galleries and museums, and much more. Read on to discover the best things to do in Stratford, Canada.

After the first town hall was destroyed by fire in 1897, many architects competed to construct another. Local architect John Wilson Siddall and Toronto architect George King’s ideas stood out, and they were awarded the task. The second town hall was completed in 1900, and it’s a wonder to behold. The building is located in a triangle-shaped town square, which is the heart of the city’s commercial district. This monumental town hall was made up of red brick with a blend of styles, including Queen Anne Revival and Flemish Renaissance styles. Some notable features include the paneled chimneys, classical cupola, and the clock tower. It was listed under Ontario Heritage Act in 1982 and National Historic Site in 1976.
