Known in the early 20th century as the “Hardware City” and the “Hardware Capital of the World”, when major manufacturers set up their headquarters here, today New Britain goes by the nickname “New Briski”. The city has always welcomed diversity, but the largest among them hail from Poland. New Britain has the largest Polish population of any city in Connecticut, so much so that the city council unanimously dubbed the Broad Street area “Little Poland”.
New Britain consists of many well-manicured public parks, including the historic Walnut Park Hill. Although it is intended as a fitness park, it is also popular for its performance space. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed Walnut Park Hill in the same spirit as Central Park, in New York City.
