1. Cooper’s Beach

Come early and pay 40 USD to park your car or come after 5 pm to get free parking. The waves here are much calmer than the further northeastern beach. 3. Shinnecock Museum and Cultural Center


This is a small museum with local artifacts of the Shinnecock tribe and local history where you can learn about the tribe that lived here for thousands of years. The museum is housed in a newer log style building. The guide will explain to you every detail of the culture and lifestyle. There are some astonishing bronze artworks on the basement floor and interesting murals from each time period, as well as historical descriptions and artifacts. To see the village in the back, you’d better not come in winter, because the village will be closed. This museum is open every Friday and weekends only.

4. Southampton Historical Museum


Visiting Southampton is not complete before you hit the Southampton Historical Museum where you can explore life in Southampton since the British came to this area. The Rogers Mansion Museum Complex has 12 historic buildings that tell the story of Southampton’s development in the 19th-century. Not all about Southampton, this museum has a terrific exhibition on the history of the Titanic and all the people who boarded the ship. There is fascinating memorabilia and footage with some great recordings of the voices of survivors telling their own stories. Well worth going to see.

5. The Thomas Hasley Homestead


Thomas Halsey was one of the founders of Southampton in 1640. He purchased this homestead in 1648 to start a farm and raise his family. The Halsey House was built by his son Thomas Halsey Jr. in 1683. Come inside the house and explore a simple two story, two room cabin which can be identified on the exterior by the diamond pattern windows. Come on Saturday from July to mid-October between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm as this historic museum is open to the public at that time. The furnishings in the house reflect a colonial farm family home in 1750 and an exhibit on the Shinnecock Tribe with a recreated Woodland Period Village c. 1,000 CE with hands-on activities for children.
