Spain is the world within a country, offering everything from lush green panoramas to desert scenes, Roman and Moorish ruins to gorgeous beaches. While the popular HBO series Game of Thrones has been shot in some stunning destinations across the world, starting in season 5, Spain started cropping up with some spectacular shooting locations. All of these iconic sites can be visited today for a touch of “déjà vu” on your Spanish vacation. Season 6 saw yet another Spanish location.
Starting in October this year and running through to December, producers will be using several Atlantic beach settings in the north of Spain, along with a couple of iconic castles and Roman ruins in the south and west of Spain. Take a brief tour of just a few of Spain’s GoT shooting locations below.

The enigmatic and iconic city of Seville proved to be a wonderful location for the ongoing Game of Thrones adventure. For those who have watched season 5, you may recognize the Real Alcázar Palace, which was used to represent the Royal Palace of Dorne in Sunspear. Rumor has it that the popular series will return to Seville for season 7, with the Real Alcázar Palace to reprise its role, along with its beautiful Water Gardens. Seville’s Reales Atarazanas will be a new location, where the Royal Dockyards are said to become a future set. Filming permission has reportedly already been given to the Game of Thrones team to use the Roman ruins of Itálica in the town of Santiponce, close to Seville, as the site of a battle scene in the upcoming season 7.

2. Osuna, Andalusia – Season 5
Also in Andalusia, the Plaza de Toros (bullring) in Osuna was used as the perfect shooting location and set for “Danzak’s Pit.”

3. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Bermeov, Galicia – Season 7
Game of Thrones location scouts apparently spotted this incredible location and filming crews were there in October last year. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (“castle rock” in Basque) is a small island located along the Bay of Biscay. The island is accessed from the mainland by first crossing an ancient stone bridge and then ascending an amazing 241 steps to the top. Once at the summit, you will find a hermitage dedicated to John the Baptist. Legend tells us that you can ring the bell three times on arrival, allowing you to make a wish.

4. Itzurun beach in Zumaia, Galicia – Season 7
Itzurun Beach, with its looming, craggy cliffs and beautiful sandy beach on the wild Atlantic Sea has been rumored to be a potential landing spot for Daenerys and the army of the Unsullied. It certainly makes the ideal and atmospheric view for scenes in season 7. The beach is accessed via a pedestrian-only path which winds through the cliffs and carries a Blue Flag status. While it looks wild and lonely in the photo, there is a promenade offering several restaurants and bars. Imagine sitting enjoying a coffee while the Game of Thrones film crew and actors were making memorable scenes!

5. Cáceres, Extremadura – Season 7
Heading now to a more central region of Spain, the medieval walled city of Cáceres is our next stop on the Game of Thrones location tour. This fascinating and historic UNESCO World Heritage Site is apparently a definite on the location list for season 7. Rumors say the city might be the site of the famous capital of the Seven Kingdoms, King’s Landing. With its mixture of Roman, Gothic and Renaissance architecture, there is no limit to the possibilities.

6. Malpartida de Cáceres - Natural Park of Los Barruecos, Extremadura – Season 7
The fascinating rock formations intermingled with pretty lakes are located in the Los Barruecos Natural Park, just outside Malpartida in the Cáceres province of Extremadura. The park starred as a filming location at the end of November last year. The local media announced shortly prior to filming that auditions were to be held for muscle-bound locals with a military background, which seems to hint at an epic battle scene being held here.

7. Almodovar del Rio, Córdoba, Andalusia – Season 7
Next, we head back to Andalusia in southern Spain and the remarkable city of Almodovar del Rio located in Córdoba province. Looming over the banks of the Guadalquivir River is an ancient Moorish castle, which was said to be a shooting location for Game of Thrones season 7. Rumors abound that the magnificent construction could play the role of the seat of House Tyrell, Highgarden. The capital city of Córdoba itself featured in season 5, where the remarkably preserved Roman Bridge in the historic center of the city played the role of the Long Bridge of Volantis.

8. Girona, Catalonia – Season 6 (from USD 44.0)
Girona, a fascinating walled city in Catalonia, featured well in season 6. With its winding, narrow cobblestoned alleyways steeply stepped walkways, cathedrals and historic arches, the city was the perfect location for Braavos. Here you can walk in Arya Stark’s footsteps while exploring the town. Many scenes were shot in the Medieval Quarter of Girona, close to the Cathedral, on Bisbe Cartaña, near the Jardins de la Francesa and on Calle de la Claveria. The city offers special tours of all the Game of Thrones locations in what it dubs the Game of Girona Experience on the first Saturday of every month.
