Northport is notable in history as being a major location for sand mines on the east coast. The John W. Engeman Theater has been a long-running staple of Northport, New York. 6. Enjoy a day beside the water at the Northport Village Dock
If you’re one of the lucky ones with a boat then you should head over to the Northport Village Dock and spend a day picnicking on the shore or eating at one of the many restaurants located just a short walk away. The dock is also located right in town so there are plenty of shops nearby to stock up on souvenirs or spoil that special person in your life. Located just off the dock is a park where the kids can play on the playground and bring the dog to enjoy some space to run around in. Also, Saturday mornings include a farmers market and live music. Not to mention, when the sun goes down, there is no better place to look at the stars as the boats float by.

7. Take in some local history at The Thompson Building
The Thompson Building is a historical landmark in Northport, built in 1889. It was founded by the Edward Thompson Company and was originally a law book publishing firm. It has also housed the Davis Aircraft Products Co. Inc. for many years, where they manufactured seat belts and other aviation products. The Thompson Building is now a mixed use building, primarily professional and office space. Some of the units in the building are now even being converted into apartments. This a great stop for anybody interested in local history or for someone that appreciates great, old architecture.

8. Visit Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary
The Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary allows visitors and if you take the kids along, they’ll love it. Apart from the animals, there are original historic barns, gardens and vegetables, local native wildlife and a store. The farm is an old landmark which is run and funded by Friends of the Farm. They provide lifelong care and rehabilitation.
You will find cows, goats, chickens, dogs and some nice packs of vegetables as well. There’s a wagon set up for you to browse the fresh produce. The place is quiet and peaceful and they like to keep it that way so the animal’s don’t become frightened. If you check out their Facebook page, they often advertise special events at the sanctuary.

9. Grab a meal at Northport Main Street
Main street has plenty of options when it comes to eating out. Breakfast at the iconic Tim’s Shipwreck Diner is an old-fashioned way to eat, but locals love it there. It’s a family friendly place and is small, as it literally is a diner so you may need to wait for a table. However, kids love the pancakes.
Skipper’s pub is another place with a historic feel to it. The place has a nautical feel to it and serves drinks and meals every day except Tuesdays.
Rocking Fish is the place to go for seafood and you can eat on the patio. They also serve sandwiches, salads, and burgers. People enjoy their fresh oysters and craft beer.
