Located in the heart of the main provincial town close to the main hub of restaurants, bars, tour operators, and budget accommodation options, Sugar Cane 1 Guest House is a great option for travellers who like to watch their pennies whilst sleeping in cute but basic accommodation. It is certainly one to look out for when visiting Thailand’s Kanchanaburi.

There is a newer Sugar Cane 2 Guest House situated a little further away, but this article is about the older Sugar Cane 1 Guest House.

The grounds reach right down to the banks of the famous River Kwai and you can soak up the majestic views from outside your door.

Here are some reasons to choose Sugar Cane 1 Guest House:

Quaint bungalows and pretty raft houses at very affordable prices

The bamboo bungalows are what many people imagine when they think of laid-back accommodation in Thailand, and those at Sugar Cane 1 Guest House certainly don’t disappoint. Adorable from the outside and equipped with all the basic facilities that you need for a comfortable stay, a night here won’t break the bank either.

Prices for a double bungalow start at just 250 THB (approximately 7 USD) for a night. Bungalows have their own private bathroom and are cooled by a free-standing electric fan.

If you want to be even closer to the riverside, you can opt to stay in one of the charming raft houses. Floating right on the water, an en suite double room with an electric fan costs 300 THB (approximately 8.50 USD) per night, whilst one with air-conditioning is still really cheap at 550 THB (approximately 15 USD) per night.

Basic room facilities for a comfortable stay

Each room has its own private bathroom with a hot water shower, as well as a reasonably comfortable double bed. The furnishings may be fairly sparse and the rooms may be starting to show signs of wear and tear, but you shouldn’t find anything wrong that will make your stay less than enjoyable. Rooms are reasonably clean.

A bedside table and clothes hooks on the wall ensure that you have somewhere to keep your day-to-day items close to hand, and the bungalows are fairly spacious. (The raft houses are a bit smaller inside than the bungalows.)

Each room type has its own outdoor seating area with a table and chairs; chill out on the communal balcony outside the raft houses or kick back on your own private terrace in front of your bungalow.

Other guest house facilities for convenience and comfort

Free Wi-Fi internet access is available in public areas and, if you are lucky, the signal may reach your rooms and thus allow you to access the internet on your devices from inside the comfort of your own room. The property does, however, specify that internet is available only in communal areas, so don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t work in your room.

Free car parking is available at the entrance to the guest house complex.

There is a central grass area where you can sit and soak up the sun if you like, but most guests prefer to hang out and socialise in the riverside restaurant and bar. Covered to protect from the harsh glare of the sun but open-sided to allow you to enjoy the beautiful river views, perch yourself at one of the wooden tables and peruse the good menu options.

Tuck into typical Thai fare, like fried rice and noodles, or enjoy a little taste of home with a sandwich and fries. The fruit smoothies are particularly recommended and a wide assortment of alcoholic beverages is also available. Beer Leo is a popular choice; crisp and refreshing, it is an ideal drink for watching as daylight fades to night over the river. Make sure to slap on plenty of mosquito repellent if sitting out during an evening to avoid waking up looking like a human pin cushion!

Members of staff can assist with booking a variety of local tours, such as to the spectacular Erawan Waterfall, as well as onward transportation and bicycle / scooter hire.

Kanchanaburi attractions within easy reach of Sugar Cane 1 Guest House

The iconic Bridge on the River Kwai is around a 20 minute walk from the property and you can also visit several historic war cemeteries and interesting museums. There are numerous shops and market stalls selling an array of souvenirs, t-shirts, jewellery, and trinkets, and there are plenty of lively bars and restaurants within just a few minutes’ walk of the guest house. Visit temples, national parks, caves, and more and have fun exploring the gorgeous and fascinating Kanchanaburi from the lovely Sugar Cane 1 Guest House.
