Harlingen, Texas, is a town in the south of Texas. It is the known as the capital of the Rio Grande Valley and you will find this town approximately 30 miles (48 km) from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It also has the distinction of being the fourth largest city in the Rio Grande Valley. With plenty to do and see and lots of entertainment for the kids, here are some fun things to do in Harlingen:

1. Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum



This is nice art museum where you can learn about the history of Harlingen. Harlingen is rich in its history and it is fun to learn about the early days. I love exploring museums and seeing how life used to be. The museum consists of not one, but three historical buildings. In the main museum building, you will find rotating arts and cultural exhibits. As for the three building, they are:

1) The original home of Lon C. Hill - Harlingen’s town founder

2) Harlingen’s first hospital

3) The Paso Real Stagecoach Inn

2. Hugh Ramsey Nature Park

3. World Birding Center

4. Iwo Jima Memorial & Museum


This statue of six military men highlights the victory of capturing Mount Suribachi, following the invasion of Iwo Jima. Two flags were raised here. Lots of people come to pay tribute to the statue and the men. The Iwo Jima Museum is also here. It is free of charge.

5. Jackson Street Market Days



On the first Saturday of every month, downtown Harlingen holds an open-air street fair. The locals love to come here to shop for antiques and collectibles, crafts, produce and of course, food. This is a free, open to the public event, that also boasts live entertainment. If you happen to be in town at this time, be sure to make some time to stop here.

6. Arroyo Park



This is a nice playground and park for everyone, Kids enjoy the playground and parents and adults like to jog and walk here. It is a place that is worth visiting with the family.

7. La Feria Nature Center




La Feria Nature Center is located outside of Harlingen, but it is a short drive to get there. It is in La Feria, Texas. There are lots of beautiful birds to see here. It is a place that is fun to explore and discover nature while doing so. There is a nice playground for the kids to play in as well.

8. Rio Grande Valley Museum



The Rio Grande Valley Museum is a history museum, in Harlingen, that is educational for all. Guided tours with knowledgeable guides are available and the museum is free of charge.
