The Avon Fishing Pier attracts fishermen from every part of the country, who come here to try their luck at catching the huge red drum, or channel fish. The pier was the first constructed pier in the Outer Banks, in 1962, and it has helped to enhance the area as a world-class fishing destination.

In 1984, its name was written in the record books, when a large red drum, weighing over 94 pounds (42.6 kg), was caught here. Since then, drum hunters have been coming here in hopes of making their own record. Passes to the pier are 12 USD for adults and 8 USD for children.
