A beautifully chic hotel close to many of central Mandalay’s attractions, the Hotel by the Red Canal is a great place to escape city life and retreat to a tropical wonderland. The verdant gardens are soothing for the soul and the rooms are both pleasing to the eye and incredibly comfortable. The hotel also allows guests to experience a little bit of the different cultures found within Burma / Myanmar.

The hotel is also sometimes referred to as the Red Canal Hotel. Visitors can pay by cash or by credit card. Card payments are taken in USD. Whilst the hotel does accept Burmese Kyat, US dollars are the most commonly used currency at the hotel.

With a good selection of amenities and services, here’s why you might love staying at the Hotel by the Red Canal:

The Hotel by the Red Canal has 25 exquisite rooms. All have a private bathroom complete with a hot water shower over a large bathtub, a hairdryer, and a selection of free toiletries. Other room features include air-conditioning, satellite TV with a wide selection of local and international channels, a DVD player, a refrigerator / mini-bar, complimentary bottled water, tea and coffee making facilities, and free Wi-Fi access. A lovely welcoming touch, you’ll find a colourful selection of fresh fruit in each room upon check-in.

There are four types of room that represent four of the country’s main ethnic groups; Shan, Chin, Kachin, and Rakhine. Rooms feature patterns, ornaments, pictures, and decorative details that are representative of the different groups, allowing guests to experience a little of the different cultures.

The different room types are also laid-out according to cultural traditions of the different ethnic groups. There is a choice of a double bed or two single beds, depending on availability, some rooms have king-sized beds, and others have both a double bed and a single bed to accommodate up to three guests.

Shan rooms overlook the gardens and pool, the balcony a pleasant place to sit and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Carved wooden details on the wardrobes and desk add to the cosy feeling. A night in a Shan room costs 280 USD (approximately 365,000 MMK).

Chin rooms also have a private balcony that overlooks the pool, gardens, and water features around the delightful grounds. Guests can enjoy an inclusive 30-minute welcome massage. Rooms cost 290 USD (approximately 378, 000 MMK) per night.

Kachin rooms feature a spectacular outdoor bathroom, creating the feeling that you are getting ready for the day in the heart of nature. Don’t worry though – nobody can see you! Surrounded by stone walls, the bathrooms are also covered to protect you from the elements. A large gap between the walls and the roof allow fresh air to circulate freely and light to flood the bedroom through the wide connecting glass door. Leafy plants and small stones finish off the outdoor theme nicely. Rooms also have an iPod dock and you can relax in one of the fluffy bathrobes. A night costs 270 USD (approximately 352,000 MMK).

Rakhine rooms have an iPod dock and bathrobes. In-room hot tubs more than make up for the lack of balcony or private outdoor space. Filled with character, sink into the large colonial-style brass bed for a great night’s sleep. Rooms are 260 USD (approximately 340, 000 MMK) per night.

Guests can start the day full of energy after enjoying the extensive daily buffet breakfast. Included in the room rate, breakfast is available each morning in the front part of the hotel’s restaurant. Called Spice Garden, the restaurant is located close to the pool and offers great views of the lovely grounds. You will really be spoilt for choice at breakfast time, with a wide array of cereals, fresh fruit, deliciously fresh breads and pastries, eggs, salad, rice dishes, hot drinks, temptingly sweet fruit juices, and more! It is a feast for both the eyes and the stomach!

The restaurant serves a wide selection of dishes at other times of the day too, with meals made fresh each day. Serving dishes from Myanmar, such as flavourful and highly-recommended Burmese curries, India, China, and Europe, there is sure to be something on the menu that appeals to your taste buds. There is a wide choice of vegetarian dishes and seafood-lovers will also be pleased.

The sophisticated and elegant restaurant is a great spot to relish various regional delights from around Burma / Myanmar. Spice Garden can also boast of being Mandalay’s only Indian-Myanmar fine-dining restaurant. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.

If you want even more intimacy at mealtimes, room service is available.

A good location for enjoying Mandalay’s fantastic sights

Although the heart of the city is not within walking distance (unless you like long walks in the heat!), it is easy enough to book a taxi from the hotel to take you out and about for the day. Taxis are also very reasonably priced. If you have your own transportation you will find a free public car park close to the hotel. (The hotel does not have its own car park.) You can arrange car rental at the hotel.

Mandalay Palace is around a five-minute drive from the property and the entrance to climb Mandalay Hill can be reached within a 15-minute drive. Most of Mandalay’s main attractions are around ten to twenty minutes away by car or taxi.

The hotel also has bicycles to rent. Explore the surrounding areas or grab a free map and peddle into the city or further afield.

Whilst you are not in the thick of the action, the Hotel by the Red Canal is close enough to easily enjoy the local sightseeing and then spend your leisure time away from the hustle and bustle in a hotel that you may never want to leave!

Stay at the Hotel by the Red Canal and enjoy the best of the old capital of Mandalay whilst staying in a spectacular hotel with plenty of atmosphere and charm.
