The city of Winchester, Virginia is steeped in history. Due to its location near busy Interstate 81, visitors have easy access to this colorful town. Lucky for travelers, the George Washington Hotel is there to stay in convenient comfort.

Renovated and looking great

King room at George Washington Hotel

This grand hotel was opened in 1924 during a time when trains were the main source of transportation. The passenger trains are all but gone but The George Washington Hotel is still looking great. This was not always the case. The hotel was closed for several years during extensive renovations in the early 2000s and reopened in April 2008. After spending 30 million USD the George Washington Grand Hotel was indeed grand again.

Situated near the vibrant Winchester downtown, The George Washington Grand Hotel is easy to find. Parking is in the large parking garage next to the hotel, plus the outside parking lot offers plenty of parking spaces for your car. Stop by the front desk first if you need a bellman’s help with your bags or parking instructions.

Guests staying here have 90 rooms and suites to choose from. A king junior suite comes with a four poster bed, a sofa bed, fireplace, Presidential Pillow Top mattress, Herman Miller desk chair, refrigerator, and Keurig coffee maker. The large bathroom features a spa whirlpool tub, vanity for two, spa shower, and Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. Depending on the time of year this luxurious suite can be had for a mere 152 USD plus taxes and fees.

A standard room with two double beds or one king bed is reasonably priced as well without sacrificing comfort. These rooms also come with the Serta Pillow Top mattress, Keurig coffee maker, Herman Miller desk chair, and Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. Rates as low as 107 USD plus taxes and fees are a bargain for this level of hotel room.

Take a look around the hotel

Half note lounge

Once you are settled in it’s time to explore this historic hotel. On the main floor, find the Half Note Lounge for evening drinks and live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. Downstairs is George’s Food and Spirits where a full-service breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu are offered. Room service is offered for those wishing to dine in their room.

Also downstairs is the Saumaj Health Spa and pool area. Let your travel stress fade away with a soak in the hot tub then transition to a custom massage package. Chair massage is available for a quick 30 minute session or chose a table massage of 30, 60, or 90 minutes for true bliss. Skin treatments like facials, body scrubs, and waxing services are available for both ladies and gents. If you are hosting a private event the spa offers a roving chair massage for guests at a fee of 75 USD per hour.

Speaking of events, The George Washington Grand Hotel has five meeting rooms that can accommodate around 400 attendees in their approximate 6,300 sq ft/585.3 sq m of event space. Weddings, business meetings, and parties are special in this historic hotel. The staff can assist with your planning needs, including audio-visual support, catering, and other special touches.

A very walkable downtown

Downtown Mall

Hopefully you are not too occupied during your stay to enjoy the local area. A visit to George Washington’s office where he worked when he was just 16 years old as a surveyor is a must-see for history buffs. This building has been added onto but still has the original office George labored in long before his fame as America’s first president. Stonewall Jackson spent significant time in Winchester during the Civil War. The house he stayed in is open for visits Monday through Sunday, and only costs 5 USD.

The downtown mall (Old Town Winchester) is said to be one of the first such pedestrian malls in America. Visitors will find plenty of great restaurants, shops, and historic buildings in this walkable venue just two blocks from the hotel. For great Italian cuisine in the downtown mall, try Vino Del Violino where if you are lucky you’ll not only get great Italian fare, but also might hear a bit of live opera singing. The father of the family that owns the restaurant is known to serenade guests on special occasions and has a fine singing voice.

Other eateries near the George Washington Hotel are the Snow White Grill- serving hamburgers and more since 1948, Red Fox Creamery- tempting passersby with homemade ice cream and whimsical sayings from Dr. Suess, and Joe’s Steakhouse- in a gorgeous former mansion.
