Oxford’s history, architecture and art scene are a draw for the city loving tourist, however, there is more beyond the city. Situated in the Oxfordshire countryside are some of the other major tourist attractions including Blenheim Palace and Bicester Village. What better way to enjoy this countryside and have easy access to both attractions than a stay in your very own ‘pod’. This small timber clad structure, with its curved roof looks more like the hull of a boat positioned in the landscape. Similar in size to a caravan, the natural materials with which it is built, ensure it blends seamlessly with the surrounding countryside. With the advent of glamping, overnight stays in a tent are a thing of the past, but even some of the alternatives still mean a little trek in flip-flops to a shared shower block, although there are exceptions, and this little pod is one of them.

Reasons to stay

The Pod

The pod is located between the villages of Kirtlington and Bletchingdon in the Oxfordshire countryside only a 20 minute drive from Oxford. On a private piece of land with adequate parking, there are no neighbours playing loud music, or people at all for that matter. It is just you, the stars at night, oh, and the horses in the adjoining field. The views are stunning, and sitting out on a summer’s eve, watching the wildlife and the setting sun, nothing could be more idyllic. In the winter it should be a snug little pod, benefitting from underfloor heating in the main area.

Location, location, location

Within a short distance from Blenheim Palace, Bicester Village shopping outlet and the little known but equally idyllic Rousham House, the pod is ideally located. If you’re up for a walk in the countryside, the hosts are very knowledgeable and I’m sure will be able to give you some local information. Because the pod is set in such a rural location, there are no street lamps to pollute the natural night sky. With this in mind, if you aren’t a boy scout or girl guide, then you may not have come fully prepared for the natural darkness. Fear not, within the pod there is even a torch. It’s worth bringing your own though just in case.

The best things come in small packages

Stylish, space saving interior.

The pod itself actually feels quite big, there’s even a cupboard for hanging clothes. The table tucks down against the wall when not in use, and the seating folds down very cleverly to make a comfortable sized double bed. Every space saving trick has been used so it doesn’t feel cramped at all.

Eat

The pod is also catered for with small jars of coffee, tea, sugar and individual milk pods. Breakfast is a simple but tasty choice of croissant or muffins and orange juice. If you like specialist tea, such as green, fruit or herbal teas, then it’s best to take your own. There are a couple of shops within driving distance so you can pick up a few provisions including a co-op grocery store in nearby Kidlington that’s open until 10 pm. Alternatively there are also a few pubs within driving distance, again the host will recommend if asked. You’ll have to flip a coin to decide which one of you is the designated driver as the country roads are quite dark and the pubs more of a short drive away.

They really have thought of everything

The pod is fully equipped with its own kitchenette that includes a microwave, toaster, kettle, fridge, cutlery and cups. It also has its very own ensuite bathroom, TV, music system, outdoor dining area and is beautifully decorated in pastel blue, white and grey. Although there is a TV in situ, who needs it, especially when the view is so good to look at. TV reception can be a little poor, so the hosts have also provided a few DVDs for your entertainment, alongside a few books. Even the stereo is so up to date that it links to modern technology, such as the iPhone 6, so you can play your own music if you wish.

They've done their bit, make sure you do yours

Do bear in mind that due to the pod’s location, guests should observe the country code and close all gates behind them. Due to its proximity to dry grasses and its wood clad exterior, smoking is not permitted on site.

Most of all, soak up the atmosphere, listen out for the wildlife, and help keep this unspoilt area naturally beautiful as it is intended to be.
