Waves provide a soothing soundtrack as they lap the beach lulling you into a daydream. As you recline in one of Sandaway Suites Adirondack chairs sipping a cool beverage, all thoughts of work and stress evaporate. As a sailboat passes by on the Tred Avon River, you contemplate a water adventure tomorrow, but for now, it’s just time to drift away into total relaxation.

The tiny town of Oxford, Maryland, is one of the state’s hidden gems. Lots of Maryland residents know of this historic town with a surprisingly good list of restaurants, activities, and outdoor fun. Few outside of the region know what a great place Oxford is to visit. Since the town is off the beaten path, most visitors will need lodging. If you crave peace and quiet, without children and dogs on the premises, Sandaway Suites is just the place for you.

A vintage home

The main house dates back to 1875 when Oxford was a bustling town of watermen, cargo ships, and pleasure boaters. Sandaway Suites has been open to the public for 44 years, offering upscale suites for an adult traveler looking for peace, quiet, and tranquility. As soon as you pass through the gates, it’s obvious you have arrived at a place of waterfront bliss and privacy.

Choose your room from the 18 non-smoking choices that incorporate local artwork with avian and nautical themes. Rooms with private porches and views may cost a bit more but are worth it for the expansive views of the water. On the porch are two rocking chairs, a wicker loveseat, and a table to place your drinks and snacks on. It’s easy to get lost in time as you gaze out on the water at wildlife and boats passing by in front of you. A pair of bald eagles might grace your view or a regatta of sleek sailboats racing by.

Amenities, inside and outside

Deluxe rooms include books, coffee maker, binoculars, laptop-sized safe, and some rooms come with an antique claw foot bathtub. A jar of bath amenities is offered for sale in each room that has a tub. This spa-in-a-jar package has lotion, bubbling milk bath, violet fig and currant salt scrub, and cucumber & honey lip repair for just 38 USD + tax. Individual heat and air conditioning controls make for maximum comfort in all seasons. Bottled water, snacks, and beverages can be found in the lobby and beach house sitting areas.

For the wannabe crab catcher, find catch-and-release crab nets on the front porch of the main house for a different type of fun. Bicycles or kayaks are available for rent and will be delivered upon request. The roads of Oxford are flat and welcoming to bicyclists of all abilities. Take a ride to one of the delicious restaurants or take a ride on the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry. As you disembark the ferry on the Bellevue side, enjoy riding the country roads to St. Michaels, Maryland. The Tred Avon area is good for kayaking, where you can paddle calm waters and scenic bays.

If the summer brings insects your way, find refuge in the screened porches where you can gaze at the water without feeding the bugs. Most visitors won’t be bothered by the local insects, but there always seems to be that special someone who gets bitten when others are left alone.

Each accommodation receives a breakfast basket with baked goods, Chobani yogurt, organic apple juice, a pot of coffee, Purely Elizabeth granola, fresh fruit, cheese, and condiments. Your basket will be delivered per your requested time each morning at 8:00, 8:30, or 9:00.
