If your memories as a child are related to your school desk and the time spent in the classroom of an old building, you will love this accommodation that reminds you of your childhood. The old classrooms have now been converted into flats! This Airbnb apartment is only 10 minutes via underground to London Victoria Station.

A building of special interest in the heart of Brixton

Alpha House, exterior

At the beginning of the 20th century, Alpha House - the apartment building where the flat is located - was known as the Santley School. More than 1,000 children have passed through the courtyard, corridors and classrooms of what today is a majestic three-storey red brick building with ogee capped towers defining the staircases. The building was originally designed by architect T.J. Bailey and still retains the charm of a place full of history. Crossing the courtyard, which was probably used by the school as a recreation area, you cannot help but notice that some side buildings still have a stone plaque above the doors that announces, ‘GIRLS’ on one side and ‘BOYS’ on the other, a relic from the strict gender separation that is, fortunately, now gone.

A minimal yet classic apartment

Alpha House, living room and mezzanine

Alpha House is the pleasant uncovering of a former educational building with its classic features yet modern design. The apartment welcomes visitors in a central space where a large window illuminates a rough wooden table with a silver candlestick in the middle, and benches on both sides. A sitting room has been created in the open-space of the ground floor using two purple sofas that, facing each other, shape an intimate space to chat or watch a movie. From the sitting room you can enter the kitchen. Even this room remains connected to the living room - the core of the house - through a glass-block wall that allows natural light to filter from one room to another. An iron staircase leads upstairs. A mezzanine overlooks the large dining table below and acts as a balcony within the house. A sofa bed for extra friends and guests and an ancient school desk make this corner of the house a liveable room or studio. The large bedroom upstairs has a view of the sitting room below, so that the atmosphere created never gives a sense of closure, but rather an airy feeling of comfort. The price per night is 110 GBP (about 157 USD).

A helpful host

Karl will give you many tips on things to do in Brixton, and the best places to visit in London. If you have a DIY attitude when it comes to trip planning, the library of the flat contains many useful guides for London and beyond – Karl is an avid traveller. On the windowsill of the living room you will find several greeting cards left by guests and friends to thank Karl for the warm welcome. Before leaving, do not forget to write one yourself and have the cat, Ava, deliver it for you! Ava is a shy cat that loves hiding under the sofa and snoozing on it! If you are a sporty traveller or simply enjoy nature, you can easily walk from the house to two parks: Brockwell Park if you like playing tennis and Clapham Common for a healthy morning jog. In the evening you will be spoiled for choice, as Brixton is an area of London with plenty of good bars, restaurants and music venues. Karl will probably recommend that you visit his favourite Italian restaurant, Franco Manca, for a delicious slow-rising sourdough pizza in the heart of Brixton Village, or an inventive British dinner at the Salon. You have to try them both to decide which is the best!

A comfortable stay just a few minutes from central London

If you want to enjoy the tranquillity of an apartment just 4 tube stops away from London Victoria Station, Alpha House is the perfect place for a romantic visit to the metropolis. If you do not believe that a school can become your home, just check it out!
