One half mile/.8 km after crossing the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel heading north is Sunset Beach Resort. This summer favorite attracts repeat customers and newcomers all summer long. Part of their success is offering a full-service hotel, gift/convenience store, private beach, Jackspot Restaurant, and RV park.

The hotel is just off of the Lankford Highway (US Route 13) for easy access. Hotel guests have several room types to choose from. A king room is perfect for solo travelers or couples who want one king bed. A double room offers two double beds just right for small families, or try the king suite with one king bed and a sofa-sleeper plus spa bath. For a larger room, consider the cottages that come with two bunk beds, a sofa-sleeper in the living room, and one queen bed. Sunset Beach Resort cottages have most of the comforts of a home, like a kitchen, fridge, dining area, front porch, and outside furniture.

Guest’s reviews highlight friendly staff, spacious rooms that were recently remodeled, excellent location, and gorgeous sunsets on their private beach. Amenities such as two swimming pools, picnic area, free concerts on select days in summer, free movie nights, shuttle service to Cape Charles, and much more keep guests coming back year-after-year. Watersport rentals and golf cart rentals are available too. Special events are on offer all summer long. In June their Pirates on the Bay features a cardboard boat race. Gusts flock to the Fourth of July event with fireworks and golf cart decorating competition providing fun for the whole family.

Pet-friendly, RV-friendly

Dog owners love the pet-friendly rooms and private beach for dogs. With lots of park-like grassy areas to walk dogs, it’s a breeze taking Fido out when nature calls. And on hot summer days, dogs love swimming or wading in the cool waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Several poop pickup bag stations are available to clean up after your pet.

RV owners will like the full hookups, FHU, and access to the beach, pool, and Jackspot Restaurant. Kids will love the playground, bicycle rentals, kids meals at Jackspot, and of course, the beach. With 300 RV pads, chances are good there’s room for you and your rig. But for busy summer weekends you’ll want to make reservations far in advance. The manager at the Jackspot Restaurant said: “Many of our RV guests have been coming to Sunset Beach for years, and it’s like a family reunion when they roll in and greet me.”

The menu features fish tacos, fish and chips, the Camper’s Chicken Sandwich, burgers, salads, desserts, and a full bar. To grab a fish taco basket and a Rum Runner for a sunset meal on their deck is the way vacation dining should be. The Jackspot also has a smartphone ordering service for guests of the hotel, RV camp, or visiting boaters. Just place your order online and receive a text message when your food is ready. Now that’s excellent service! Dogs are welcome at the Jackspot on their two outdoor decks. Operating hours are Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and 11-11 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Staying at the Sunset Beach Resort places you near many indoor and outdoor activities. Anglers and boaters will enjoy Kiptopeke State Park where a semi-circle of vintage warships were sunk to make an artificial reef. The well-preserved town of Cape Charles is just a ten-minute drive north where Cape Charles Brewing Company, two excellent bakeries, art galleries, several restaurants, a candy shop, and more await you.

Historical points of interest

A drive of 90 minutes north takes you to Chincoteague Island where wild horses can still be seen roaming the beach. History buffs will find lots of interesting places and famous people, like the story of 13-year-old Thomas Savage who landed in Jamestown in 1608. Thomas later moved to the southern Delmarva Peninsula just up the road from Sunset Beach Resort. His relatives still live in the area 400 years later. There are enough points of historical interest and wildlife viewing to provide several day trips during your visit. Osprey and eagles are some of the fascinating birds to watch along the area’s waters. Just be sure to bring insect repellent if you plan to go on hiking trips.

Back for the night

When your day trips are over, come back to live life in the lap of luxury where a refreshing beverage and comfortable night’s lodging wait for your return.
