In a city with little green space, Paris’ Bois de Vincennes (Vincennes Woods) is a welcome respite from the chaos of Paris. Located in the 12th district in eastern Paris, this park is like an oasis thanks to its calm lake, its fascinating flora and fauna, and the adorable row boats available for rent. If you feel the need to reconnect with nature during your stay in Paris, head straight here.

Watch your stress melt away in the calm setting

View of a temple and the lake

Although the park is situated in a busy entrance point to Paris, it is one of the most tranquil areas in the city. Spread over 1,000 hectares (2471 acres), this park is enormous to say the least. You could easily spend several days here and still not see everything. Have a picnic on the vast lawns, take a stroll around the lake, or rent a bike and take a ride. Another attractive feature of the park are its two islands. Accessible on foot or by bike, these islands further contribute to the serenity of this location. Regardless of your relaxation preferences, you’ll feel at ease in the Bois de Vincennes.

Discover the flora and the fauna

Peacocks lounging

It’s quite easy to forget about nature when you’re surrounded by the thousands of cafes and attractions in Paris. Luckily, a trip to Bois de Vincennes will remind you of the incredible variety that exists. This park counts about 80 different species of trees, with some dating as far back as the park’s opening in 1865. Each tree is labeled with both its common and its scientific name. They come from all regions of the world and demonstrate the desire of the park’s designers to create a bucolic atmosphere in Paris. In addition, there is a vast selection of beautiful flowers, especially in the warmer months.

If animals are more your area of interest, you won’t be disappointed. Notably, there is an incredible array of bird life in the park. From peacocks sunning themselves on the grass, to ducklings marching behind their mother, and swans gracefully floating in the lake, you’ll be sure to see all types of birds engaging in all kinds of activities. On the weekends, be sure to say “Hi!” to the ponies available for rent.

Rent a boat and take a tour of the lake

Row boats for rent

The Bois de Vincennes counts four lakes including Daumesnil, Minimes, Saint-Mande, and Gravelle. Row boats are available at both Lac Daumesnil (Lake Daumesnil) and Lac des Minimes (Lake of Minimes). Boats can be rented by the hour and can be shared between one and four passengers. Lake Daumesnil is spread over 12 hectares (30 acres) and the Lake of Minimes is about 6 hectares (15 acres). Both can be explored in less than an hour. During the boat ride you’ll discover secret coves, rub elbows with the birds, and pass by the Buddhist- and Tibetan-inspired temples on the shore.

Get your full dose of nature in Paris

If you’re looking for a truly unique and peaceful experience in Paris, look no further than Bois de Vincennes. Its sprawling green spaces, diverse natural life, and charming row boats are a rare find in the capital. Spend a few hours decompressing or hang out all day long. In whatever way you choose to experience this park, you’ll have fun, make memories, and leave feeling calm.
