Tucked away in the southeast corner of the Dupont Circle neighborhood, The Jefferson Washington, DC is one of DC’s best hotels for the boutique hotel loving traveler. With a Thomas Jefferson theme guests revel in a historic hotel containing many of the things the third president of the United States loved.

Three year long renovations made a big difference

The Jefferson Washington DC exterior

First and foremost is the level of comfort and service of the guest rooms. Beyond that is great food, wine, and a book room Thomas Jefferson would no doubt approve of. Top notch bellmen greet guests guiding them seamlessly to accommodations among the 95 guestrooms and suites. Starting with the reception you will find friendly, professional service setting a standard hard to match anywhere. All of the facilities seem brand new following an extensive three-year renovation completed in August 2009. This former Beaux Arts designed residential building shows off all its former glory from its construction in 1923. Back then it was an apartment building for savvy Washingtonians. Come to experience true luxury at this prestigious address.

Defined luxury in each room

a king room

A deluxe suite will bring DC to your window as you gaze out on the nation’s capital from the comfort of your room. For over-the-top luxury chose one of two royal suites, the Martha Jefferson or Thomas Jefferson suites will dazzle guests with high-end furnishings and great views. While the Martha Jefferson suite is romantic, the Thomas Jefferson suite is fit for a king. Look out over Washington, DC from one of five Juliet balconies and breathe the fresh air. Enjoy a glass of fine Madeira from the hotels 7,000 bottle wine cellar while you relax gazing at the gas fireplace in a grand salon with walnut parquet flooring.

Other amenities include: 24 hour butler service, The Petite Spa, historical Thomas Jefferson documents display, pet friendly, valet parking (49USD) meeting rooms, business center, and concierge, custom Jefferson bow ties for guests, daily newspapers, complimentary morning coffee in the lobby with mini-muffins, and 24 hour fitness center.

Fine dining extraordinaire

Plume wines

Dining and cocktail options are substantial. For breakfast, lunch or brunch, dine under the antique 1923 skylight uncovered during renovations. This magnificent glass and metal skylight had been covered up by concrete for decades due to World War ll blackout restrictions. Quill restaurant and bar offers classic and signature cocktails, a dynamic wine list, and fine bar menu. Enjoy the outdoor patio in good weather, or kick back inside and admire the parquet flooring based on designs in Jefferson’s Monticello. Live piano music in Quill runs Tuesday through Saturday beginning at 9 pm featuring Peter Robinson.

The best food and wine in DC

octopus starter

Plume restaurant, open Tuesday-Saturday is one of DC’s best fine-dining restaurants. Manager Sean Mulligan and sommelier Jenifer Knowles are two of the finest in the business. The wait staff is very knowledgeable also and know the menu well. An example of a perfect Prix Fix (98USD) dinner might be a starter of diver-caught sea scallops, followed by Lobster Gratin served in the split shell of the lobster, finished with the “Everything Chocolate” dessert. A chef’s tasting menu option (115USD) is available; providing a five-course affair including the “pre-dessert” and amuse bouche.

Wines by the glass are waiting for your selection to pair with dinner or have sommelier Jennifer Knowles help with a special bottle of wine. Her “gem” selections are indeed gems. On our recent visit to Plume, my wife and I tried the Chateau De Lavernette Beaujolais-Leynes 2009 which brought sighs of joy upon first sip and paired brilliantly with my bison strip steak. Enjoy after dinner glass of fine Madeira, or wine from the hotel’s wine cellar featuring over 1,300 labels while you relax in the lap of luxury. Thomas Jefferson was fond of Madeira wine and at Plume, you can try a sampling of several for an after dinner treat. One Madeira on offer is H.M. Borges, Sercial, “Palther” from 1720 and sells for $1,720 for a two-ounce pour!

Close to everything, but why leave?

The Jefferson is convenient to the National Mall and most anything else in the Washington, DC area. The shops of Dupont Circle are a refreshing 10-minute stroll away or very short drive. Restaurants of almost any ethnic variety can be found within a 10-15 minute taxi ride away, depending on traffic. With restaurants as great as Plume and Quill you probably won’t want to leave your quiet and cosy surroundings, though. Come and enjoy this world-class boutique hotel steeped in historic luxury. This is where your Washington, DC visit should start.
