Cheney, Washington is not your usual tourist destination. In fact, this lovely little town is known for being more of a community town because of its family-friendly environment. Cheney takes a lot of pride in being a small town but owes a lot of its progress and diversity as a community to Eastern Washington University, which is pretty much the heart of Cheney. Because of EWU and its students, their population increases a bit from time to time but that shouldn’t mean tourists don’t contribute to that number. Cheney welcomes travelers from far places and accommodates them in hotels and Airbnb vacation rentals. There are several recreational and nature activities fit for everyone to enjoy as well. 1. Take stunning wildlife photos at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge

As a result of the natural forces of floods, volcanic eruptions, and glacial movements, Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge was formed into what it is today. The variety of wildlife located in this 18,217-acre (7,372-hectare) area is pretty impressive. These range from thousands of bird species, about 45 different species of mammals, several types of reptiles and amphibians, and numerous kinds of fish. Since being established by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1937, the refuge has thrived to become a significant and amazing destination for tourists and locals to appreciate wildlife in their natural habitat. It’s also an awesome photography hotspot!

Yes, Cheney has some nightlife, too! Eagle’s Pub is your typical college bar and the premier hang-out destination of the Eastern Washington University students. 3. Learn about the local history at Cheney Historical Museum

Cheney Historical Museum started in 1935 as a simple museum collection through the initiative of the Tilicum Club, a group of dedicated women who have since then nurtured the collection. The museum covers not only Cheney’s history but also those of next-door neighbors Marshall, Four Lakes, Tyler, and Amber as well. The interesting thing about this museum is that many of the artifacts and documents displayed are actual stories donated by members of the community. There’s no fee to visit however the museum is only able to operate through donations from guests and visitors.

5. Spend the day with your family at Fish Lake Regional Park


Though located mainly in the rural parts of Spokane County, Fish Lake Regional Park still borders the town of Cheney. The 67.5-acre (27.3-hectare) park consists of hiking trails, a barbecue area, a basketball court, and several parking spaces. There’s also a beach where visitors may swim at their own responsibility due to the absence of a lifeguard. The park also precautions guests about Swimmers Itch; in fact, they have a guideline all about it on their website. Don’t let these stop you from having a good time, though! Another popular nightlife destination at Cheney is The Basement. Spend the night partying and dancing with friends at The Basement all the way until two o'clock in the morning! Thursdays are especially more fun and exciting as the locals call it the night of debauchery. If you’re not into big crowds and you have a bit of claustrophobia though, this isn’t the kind of night life for you. A great place for families to come together for some bonding is Cheney Lanes. Though the facility itself is not big, it gives off the warm and cozy atmosphere perfect for families. The alley has eight lanes though past visitors have said that it’s never crowded and there’s always room for people to play. Aside from the awesome atmosphere, people have gushed about their delicious pizza and friendly staff!

The Fairways Golf Course is the premier golf course in Cheney. The 18-hole course is privately owned but is accessible to the public via a daily fee or an annual membership fee. The beautiful landscape of rolling hills with the western horizon of mountains gives an additional good reason to check it out. 9. Go on a long but rewarding hike through Columbia Plateau Trail State Park - Cheney Trailhead

Dubbed as a hidden treasure of Washington state, the Columbia Plateau Trail State Park is a 130-mile (290-kilometer) trail from Fish Lake to the end of Snake River. Along the way, you’ll be able to pass the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Amber Lake, and the former Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railroad. The hike also provides perfect scenic views of nature for photographers. Be weary that the hike is incredibly long and may be tough for those who are not used to walking long distances. Cheney Farmers Market is the place to go if you’re looking for locally produced food and items in Cheney. Located in Hagelin Park, Cheney Outdoor Pool is a public pool perfect for families, especially for children. Take a few laps and relax after a stressful day or take your child to enroll in swimming lessons. Rates and more details are available on their website. Just remember to be mindful of the pool’s rules and regulations. For example, a child must be at least 10 years old and is able to pass a swim test before being in the pool without an adult. Part of the initiative of Cheney Parks and Recreation program, it’s a great place to meet new friends too! Be on the lookout on their website for fun activities held at the pool.
