Montserrat, a small British Overseas Territory on the Caribbean, is one of nature’s gifts to humanity. Once a top tourist destination, Montserrat was struck when its formerly inactive Soufriere Hills Volcano erupted in 1995, leaving the island’s southern coast covered in over 6.1 meters (20 feet) of ash. But like the proverbial phoenix, Montserrat is gradually getting back to its glory days. The now safe and inhabited northern part of the island is a beautiful place to visit. With its dark sandy beaches overlooking the calm Caribbean sea, the island is blessed with lush vegetation and exotic wildlife. Enjoy stunning views of the landscape, the volcano, and its ruins blanketed by luxurious rain forest vegetation. Go on the several exciting hiking trails and get a chance to see the unique Montserrat Oriole. You don’t want to miss all the fantastic festivities of St. Patrick’s Day and so many other entertaining things to do in Montserrat, Caribbean.

Montserrat’s most notable feature, the great Soufriere Hills Volcano, is the island’s monument. This massive dome-shaped hill was inactive for about 400 years before its major eruption in 1995. Since then, it has continued as one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with frequent ash expulsions and pyroclastic flows. There are several places on the island to gaze upon and marvel at this powerful tool of nature in its pure unbridled state. To refer to “Madam Soufriere” – as it is fondly called – as great is an understatement. She is sheer magnificence. And you get a chance to see her up close – well, as close as you can safely be.
