Blending rustic history and modernity, Neemrana Fort and Palace is one of Rajasthan’s oldest heritage luxury hotels. It features 12 levels and is spread out over 6 acres (2.5 hectares), with multiple mahals (mansions) within, including Sheela Mahal, Chandra Mahal, Hara Mahal, and Deva Mahal, among others. This property has free Wi-Fi, a cafe and a bar, spa and sauna, a fitness centre, two outdoor pools, and two restaurants for its guests. However, what makes Neemrana utterly unique is the fact that while the rooms have modern coffeemakers, minibars, and en suite bathrooms, they do not feature a TV, keeping in mind the place’s natural heritage. However, when you have the gorgeous architecture of Rajasthan to explore, you’ll forget about that!

One of the best of its kind in India, the subterranean Baori at Neemrana is also the largest and deepest one in the country! The multi-storied stepwell from the 1740s features 86 collonaded entries, and it takes 170 to 200 steps to reach the water at the bottom of the moist, cool environs. Today, Neemrana Baori is in a state of crumbling abandonment and might not even feature in any guidebooks, but if you are heading to this tiny town, a visit to this stunning place is warranted.

Ibrahim Khan Sur was the grandfather of Sher Shah Suri, the Pashtun founder of the Sur Empire in India. Inscriptions on Ibrahim Khan Sur’s tomb in Narnaul, the place where he died, suggest that the tomb was built above his grave as per the instructions of Sher Shah Suri in his grandfather’s memory. Standing on a raised square platform, it was designed and built in the Pathan style by Sher Shah’s personal architect. The structure and its façade feature exquisite red sandstone carvings with grey limestone borders. The dome on top is balanced by four octagonal cupolas on each corner.
