The town of Azay Le Rideau, France is located about 15 miles (24.14 km) southwest of Tours down the Indre River. Like many places in France, Azay Le Rideau has a lot of rich history behind it. Originally, the town was a site of a Roman villa which became known as Azayum by the 12th century. After Charles VII was insulted by the Burgundian guard, he ordered the execution of 350 soldiers and burned the town to the ground. It was then known as “Azay Le Brule” (or Azay the Burnt in English). The town is built on a hill and has characteristically twisted and narrow medieval streets. These days, Azay Le Rideau is known for its grandiose Chateau which sits on an island on the river. The chateau is surrounded by a park and is two storeys high with turrets and sharply pointed roofs. It is now furnished as a Renaissance museum. Azay Le Rideau is also known for its delicious rose and white wine.
