Alabama might not be known for eclectic cafes, cool shops, and posh lodging. But that could change if the world ever discovers Fairhope, a place quite different from other Alabama towns. Situated on the shores of Mobile Bay, Fairhope is a delight to visit. Streets are lined with antebellum houses, turn of the century homes, Spanish moss-laden oaks, and plenty of flower beds.

With two full bedrooms, bathrooms, and a sleeper sofa, the suite accommodates up to six adults. Each bedroom features ceiling fans to augment the apartment’s air conditioning for maximum comfort. For longer stays, guests will love the large closets, chest of drawers, and laundry facilities in the suite. In the master bathroom, a shower wand and rain shower head are a cut above most vacation rentals. Both bathrooms have plush towels so soft you almost want to linger in their soft embrace all morning.

The owner has gone the extra mile for guests with babies. Parents will love that the suite comes with a baby crib, baby bath, baby monitor, baby sunglasses, and more. There’s a decent selection of children’s books and adult books in the pantry for reading time. Around 12 board games and decks of cards will find a welcoming place on the game table in the middle of the living room. The game table has four space-saving stools that fit neatly under the table when needed.

For more impressive amenities, in the laundry room is a basket with charging cords for most smartphones- even Google Pixel! Also in the basket are Advil, shaving razors, toothbrush kits, feminine hygiene products, and sound machines. Laundry soap is provided free of charge, adding to the list of useful amenities.

What really made the suite appeal to us was the central downtown location. We could walk to the restaurant Another Broken Egg in less than three minutes. Don’t miss this place for breakfast, brunch, or lunch as their extensive menu features excellent down south fare. Just a few steps further will bring you to the Alley Bistro and Winebar for lunch, dinner, or just wine and appetizers. This European-like alley setting makes you feel like you are in Italy. The food and service are excellent, and the new owners are working on the wine list to bring it up a notch.

A little further up Fairhope Avenue, is R Bistro where world-class desserts and fine dining are offered. We had the avocado/crab sandwich and the shaved Brussel sprout Caesar salad for lunch that were fabulous. R Bistro’s pastry chef trained under two award-winning pastry chefs, and it shows.

Walk, bike, jog, or fish?

Check out the Page and Palette bookstore for a small town experience not to be missed. This special bookstore has an excellent selection of books for the avid old-school readers, author book signings, Latte Da coffee shop, and live entertainment. Don’t miss the one dollar ice cream cone at Latte Da, and pair it with a slice of delicious cake.

Guests are within a ten minute walk to the waterfront parks and trails that lookout on Mobile Bay. Joggers, bicyclists, fisherman, and bird watchers will find plenty to like about this waterfront.

After spending three blissful nights in Suite 16, the only possible negative was a hint of music from a bar on Fairhope Avenue. The sound didn’t bother us, but might be a concern for light sleepers. The owner told me the late night music is against town noise ordinance and hopes it will be corrected soon.
