Though Spain is known for its gorgeous sandy white beaches, you should take some time to bond with nature in a place that’s out of the sun’s reach. Dedicate a whole day or at least just a few hours to go to Nerja Caves, or more commonly known as Cuevas de Nerja. Lies on the border of Costa Granadina, the eastern point of Costa del Sol Occidental is Nerja, the town in which Cuevas de Nerja sits. A stunning underground cave where the world’s biggest and lengthiest stalactite is located. The cave has a history as fascinating as its limestone walls. Here is a guide to Cuevas De Nerja, so you are well prepared when you come here and thus able to have the best holiday of your life!

Guided tour

Marvel at the stunning beauty of this natural wonder through a guided tour. Discovered around 1959, this largest stalactites and stalagmites cavern in the world looks almost like a place from another world. The cave was formed by water through a long process that begins five million years ago. Water penetrated deep into the mountain’s rock formation, creating a hollow passageway that we know as Cuevas De Nerja now. What’s so captivating about this cavern is the subtle changing of the color of the stones. The unique formation of its stalactites and stalagmites resemble that of an underground cathedral.

Audio-visual presentation

Your adventure to this place begins with watching an approximately 10-minute audiovisual presentation of the details of this cavern. After that listen to the explanation on the different chambers of the cave as well as the other aspects of it, through a high-quality audio guide, as you venture deeper into the cave. Once you’ve explored every last bit of the area, make sure to check out the galleries. Occupying an area of 9,371 square meters (100868.6 square feet), the galleries take up to roughly one-third part of the cave. In one of the galleries, visitors may gaze at the site’s *collection of skeletons** discovered during the excavation of the cave.

Puente Aguila

Looking for a hearty meal after burning all of those calories? Located just three minutes’ walking distance from the cave, Puente Aguila is the right spot to hit up. Do try their Diavolo pizza - a thin crust pizza with spicy sauce, mozzarella, and salami. Served fresh and hot! Another food to try here is chicken kebab, generous chunks of poultry meat served with fresh and crisp salad along with condiments and chips. If you plan to just get a quick bite before setting off for some more walking, go for their focaccia. An Italian flatbread baked with a texture similar to that of pizza dough. Pair any of your meals with their smoothies. Eating here will also leave minimal damage to your wallet as their foods are reasonably priced.

Wear comfortable shoes

Since this site is a cave, you can expect unlevel and rocky ground throughout the area.

Arrive early

It’s also good to keep in mind that since visitors of the cave usually begin queueing hours before the line is opened, you should arrive at the spot at least half an hour before the opening hour.

Carry warm clothes

Additionally, since the temperature begins to drop in the deeper part of the cave, it can be quite cold to walk. If you’re one of those people who really can’t stand cold, we advise you to bring an extra layer of clothing just in case.

Don't look for wheelchair access

As such it is almost with certainty that we say this place doesn’t have a wheelchair facility. Also, it’s gonna be quite a challenge for people with mobility issues to explore the area mainly because they will have a hard time coping with the highs and lows of the steps and particularly the walkways.
