Leesburg, Virginia is found along the Potomac River and near the border of Maryland. Colonists began settling the area in the early 18th century, so the town has a historic district and many historic buildings. Among these are the Morven Park estate (former home of Westmoreland Davis, a former Virginia governor), the Oatlands Plantation (now a national landmark), the Carlheim (Paxton) mansion, and White’s Ferry—the only ferry left that goes across the Potomac River. The ferry service has been in operation since 1828. For some Civil War history, you can visit Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park. It gives tours of the battlefield and does reenactments of the Battle of Ball’s Bluff.
