The sun-drenched sands of Kappad Beach is a picturesque getaway where the sparking waves of the Arabia Sea wash the shore and gentle palm trees sway. With its gorgeous coastline and fascinating history, this beautiful beach near the town of Kozhikode (aka Calicut) in the Indian state of Kerala is an exceptional vacation spot. Kappad Beach, which is also referred to as Kappakadavu Beach, is the ideal destination for rest, relaxation, and laid back recreation. Go swimming in the crystal-clear surf, then sunbathe on the golden sand and explore the tide pools that form around the beach’s unique rock formations. Cruise along the Kappad backwaters and explore the maze of canals, lakes and lagoons that dot the river channels, or on land, discover an 800-year old temple. Sunbathing and sunsets

The silvery sands of Kappad Beach are pristine and serene and are perfect for sunbathing. Walk along the soft stretch of sand, or stroll along the paved boardwalk and admire the spectacular coastal views. Another favorite activity at Kappad Beach is to enjoy the view at sunset. The area is renowned for its vibrant sunset views and colorful skies.

Historic attractions

Kappad Beach houses a stone memorial that commemorates the arrival of navigator Vasco da Gama on Indian shores. The Portuguese explorer is said to have landed at Kappad Beach on May 27, 1498, and from here, established the “Spice Route” and trading ties between Europe and India. While historians now believe that Vasco da Gama may have actually landed at the nearby town of Panthalayini, the monument is still a unique attraction memorializing the local area’s past.

Another historic attraction to visit is the Temple on the Rock. Believed to be around 800 years old, this Hindu temple is perched on a rocky outcropping facing the sea and is dedicated to the goddess Devi.

Boating

One of the most popular pursuits at Kappad Beach is boating along the backwaters. With its series of flowing canals, lakes and lagoons, this unspoiled landscape is filled with picturesque scenery. Some cruise options also offer tours along the *Kallai River and Elathur Channel, as well as nearby fishing villages, which offer a unique glimpse of the tranquil countryside around Kappad Beach.

Beach shacks

There are several small eateries and seaside shacks located on the beach, and many serve fresh fish and seafood dishes. You can also pick up drinks here, as well as snacks like fresh fruit. Keep an eye out for the wafer-thin banana chips that are a specialty of Kozhikode! They not only offer the incredible taste of crispy fried raw banana, but also a peep into the tastes of the south.

Swimming advisory

Due to the area’s surprising depth, Kappad Beach may be more suited to stronger swimmers. All swimmers should look up daily swimming conditions and remain aware of potential hazards.

When to visit

To avoid monsoons, the best time to visit Kappad Beach is from October through March. The beach is beautiful at any time of the day, but sunset is a particularly scenic time to visit.

Beach vendors

In addition to food vendors on the beach, there are several shops and stalls selling a variety of souvenirs. If you need a break from sunbathing, enjoy some shopping and peruse items like clothing, knick-knacks, and special snacks from the area.

What to bring

While entrance to the beach is free, you may want to bring along cash to pay for snacks or souvenirs from the vendors on the beach. You also won’t want to forget sunscreen or a beach towel!

By bus

Kappad Beach is accessible by public bus. From the Kozhikode Municipal Bus Stand (New Stand), it is a nearly 4 mile (6.5 km) ride to the beach.

By car

To reach Kappad Beach by private car, drive along the Kozhikode-Kannur road (NH 17). Turn left at Thiruvangoor, then continue straight until you see signs for Kappad Beach. Free parking is available at the beach.
