The M.G.M Hotel In Yangon: Glamorous, And Nothing Like Las Vegas!

The M.G.M Hotel is a very well known hotel. All the taxi drivers know where it is, and it has a certain mystique about it that enchants many, if not most, of its visitors. Yet they live in worlds apart, with one in Las Vegas, and one in Yangon, Myanmar. Each has its charms, but for a one-of-a-kind experience, take a gamble on the M.G.M Hotel in Yangon. It’s idiosyncrasies and stylistic juxtapositions may, if you squint just right, be a match for the glitter of Las Vegas. Hopefully it will not surprise you to hear that this hotel has absolutely no relation to the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.

An inauspicious entrance? I think not.

While it may not be wheelchair accessible, or particularly luggage-friendly, the stairway entry does make the hotel impervious to moderate flooding, and there are porters to whisk your luggage - and presumably even you, if necessary - right into the front desk area. As the hotel is centrally located, you will never have a problem getting a taxi, nor will you find it difficult to get yourself a nice meal, be it in the hotel’s Chinese restaurant, or one of the many nearby restaurants.

Nice views and plenty of natural light

Most rooms are on the higher floors, which afford you views such as the one above. Though there may appear to be a bit of squalor in the immediate vicinity at first blush, it’s actually a fairly prosperous part of town. It’s just dirty, and you’ll get used to it.

Clean, comfortable, spacious guest rooms

You’ll (hopefully) find some humor in the hotel’s idiosyncrasies, but as far as the rooms go, key indicators are all a solid ‘go’. Lots of space, enough bed real estate to sleep four (this was booked as a room for two), a sitting area, desk, and a very nice window to gaze out from and plan your sightseeing conquests. This clean, orderly, well air-conditioned room more than does the job.

A bathroom for being efficient in

Like the attached bedroom, the bathroom is very clean. That big door just barely squeezes by the sink, which can make getting in and out of the bathroom a bit like a funhouse, which is naturally going to be fun. A shower area is out of frame to the right. Soap and shampoo is provided, but don’t get too excited.

Once upon a time, there were two elevators

once upon a time, there were two elevators

Why have two elevators, when one is enough? Not only has the elevator at right been excised like an despicable cancer, but so have its doors. You should most definitely not move the blockading furniture and peel back the plywood, because falling to your death down an elevator shaft in Yangon is a very, very ignominious way to die.

Many more surprises await, so let’s just leave it at this

All joking aside, the rooms and bathrooms at the M.G.M Hotel are perfectly fine, even good. And with rates around 37 USD per night for two people, including breakfast, you are going to be not only satisfied, but entertained by it all too.
