1. Explore the Mysterious Lava Tunnels at Gruta do Carvão
In the western part of Ponta Delgada, you can find a natural wonder called Gruta do Carvão. Unlike many geologic phenomena, volcanic caves are not very frequent. The cave has over 2,500 meters (1640.42 feet) of winding lava tunnels divided into three main sections and several collapsed intermediate areas.
You can explore Gruta do Carvão through two tours: Small Route and Long Route. The Small Route covers around 200 meters (656.17 feet) with a guide, while the Long Route covers around 800 meters (2624.67 feet) with a speleological formation guide. Both tours have different levels of difficulty and requirements and provide helmets and other gear.

3. Take in the resplendent masterpiece, Igreja de São José
Igreja de São José stands as a brilliant architectural wonder on the cobbled streets of Ponta Delgada. Having been built in the 17th century as part of a Franciscan monastery, it still holds firm the external elements of that time. It uses Mannerist and Baroque styles and the two blend well to create a masterpiece. There is decorated gilded woodwork and opulent furniture made from jacaranda. 4. Head to Forte de São Bras
Forte de São Bras was once one of the most vital fortresses in Ponta Delgada, as it was used to defend the city against pirate attacks since being established in the 16th century. Memories are attached to this fort as a monument at the fort was dedicated to seamen who died in WW1. Today, a grand tour can be taken at the fort which is now occupied by Azores Military Museum, which has an intriguing collection. The fort is also an active military post and is used by the Command of Azores Military Zone.
