The dusty sand dunes rising majestically above Merzouga and Hassi Labied are called Erg Chebbi. They enthrall travelers from afar to this dream desert destination. The legend goes that when a wealthy family refused hospitality to a poor woman and her son, God was offended, and buried them under the mounds of sand called Erg Chebbi. Merzouga is a village in the Sahara Desert in Morocco on the edge of Erg Chebbi, where winters are always cool and sunny, and summers are hot and steamy. Most people travel via camel safaris to get to this place, although you can drive as well. A variety of animals can be seen here - the ducks, in early spring, flamingos on the Dayet Srji salt lake, and the many species of birds unique to this region. There are also reptiles and mammals. If you camp out in the desert, these wild creatures may visit and you can see their tracks in the sand. Guests usually come to walk bare feet on the sand, bird-watch, or participate in meditation, yoga, or dance retreats. A modern village, Merzouga has shops just like any other city so you’ll still feel close to civilization even as you dip yourself into the exoticism of the desert. If you’re visiting, be sure to check out our wonderful selection of Airbnb vacation rentals below.
