In a city that’s known for over the top trendsetting – where each new hotel tries to outdo the rest – and a nightlife that never closes, it’s refreshing to find a hotel that’s bucking the trend. 1 Hotel South Beach is a new concept hotel from Starwood Group that serves as an oasis in Miami’s famed South Beach for those wishing to enjoy the sandy beaches, clear blue waters, and year round warm weather, but not the party. Some might even argue that 1 Hotel South Beach is helping guests explore South Beach how it was meant to be explored, through nature and what 1 Hotel South Beach calls a focus on the #DayLife.

Nature is integral to 1 Hotel South Beach

As 1 Hotel CEO and Chairman Barry Sternlicht states, “We are not a brand, we are a cause. A cause built off a simple idea: the world around us is beautiful, and we want to keep it that way.” The hotel’s honor of nature is found in everything guests touch, see, smell, and taste at 1 Hotel South Beach. The lobbies and rooms are filled with living plants, natural light is used whenever possible, and the staff’s uniforms are made from organic fibers. Even the complimentary shuttle that takes guests around South Beach – a Tesla – respects the environment.

Relax in fresh, comfortable rooms

While “fresh” may be a strange word to describe a hotel room, it’s the only one I could think of to accurately describe guest rooms at 1 Hotel South Beach. The rooms – which resemble an upscale cabin with a generous use of reclaimed wood – are created and maintained with sustainability of the land and body in mind. Each room comes with a triple filtered water system, a yoga mat, Hepa air filters, bath products featuring naturally derived ingredients, and organic cotton sheets.

To help minimalize the hotel’s carbon footprint, appliances like hairdryers and irons are eco-friendly. The shower even has a five minute sand timer to help remind guests that water, too, is a precious resource that shouldn’t be wasted. The result is an environment that helps guests wake up naturally refreshed and ready to explore the Florida sunshine.

Dine at locally focused, organic restaurants

As one would expect, the restaurants at 1 Hotel South Beach operate with the same focus on organic and natural starting with Beachcraft, which is led by five-time James Beard winner Tom Colicchio. The seasonal restaurant sources all produce, meat, dairy, grains, and fish from local farmers and fisherman.

Tom Colicchio also helped design the pool bar (The Sand Box) and the lobby bar (Tom on Collins). Both offer light snacks and drinks prepared from seasonal Florida ingredients for the much needed refreshment from the heat. Guests also have access to The 1 Rooftop. Enjoy Mediterranean and Latin inspired tapas, craft cocktails, and organic wines with a view of South Beach from the hotel’s 18th floor.

Partake in the #DayLife

Beyond the four pools (each with rentable cabanas), there are plenty of diversions to help guests make the most of the healthy and fit beach lifestyle starting with the gym which includes complimentary circuit training and yoga. For the more adventurous, try a paddleboard yoga class on the ocean. Or, partake in the many beach activities like beach volleyball.

I was born in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, in the Soviet Union, and left for the USA when I was 23 years old, just out of college. Leningrad was and still is a city with great cultural traditions. I fell in love with its world-famous museums, art galleries, theaters, and other attractions. I have been guiding tours for most of my life and began while still in high school. During the summer, Leningrad was visited by numerous youth groups from the UK and USA and English-speaking students were recruited to show them around. That is how I got my first taste of being a tour guide. I continued guiding through college and often worked with young adults. After leaving the USSR, I settled in New York City, went to graduate school, and started my own travel company in 1985. We primarily worked with international visitors showing them famous places of interest all over the country, from coast to coast. Though I had other tour guides working at my company, I continued to guide because it was rewarding and enjoyable. I traveled extensively throughout the country and that's how I first became acquainted with South Florida. I instantly fell in love with this beautiful place and eventually moved to the Miami Beach area. I love South Florida and want my tourists to feel the same way. I am exhilarated by its nature and history and I promise to get you excited as well. See you in Miami!

Enhance your stay with modern technology

All rooms come with complimentary Wi-Fi, which is rare in luxury hotels. Other modern touches include the in-room Nexus devices that serve as an electronic concierge to all that the hotel and South Beach has to offer (Don’t worry, an in person concierge is also available). Probably my favorite electronic feature is the Press Reader on the Nexus device which delivers a digital copy of your favorite newspaper. Rooms also come equipped with 55-inch LCD TVs and Bluetooth speakers.

Enjoy a new type of vacation in Miami

As I said in the intro, 1 Hotel South Beach is bucking the trend of the never ending party that Miami is known for. Or is it? Perhaps this is the way the new crop of luxury tourists want to travel. A way that respects the environment and delivers mind, body, and soul relaxation. All I know is, this is the way I want to travel. As a former resident of Miami, I’m glad 1 Hotel South Beach is there for when I return to visit the Magic City.
