Great surf, friendly people and amazing cafes are only a few of the things Newquay has to offer. It is the perfect holiday destination for anyone who enjoys being by the seaside.

Newquay is situated in the heart of Cornwall, a county in the southwest region of England. The area is known for long and rocky coastlines, beautiful villages and mild climates. Many English tourists come to this area over the summer, as it is where you will find the best weather and beaches in England. There is so much to see, do and eat, so make sure you stay for at least a week.

Surfing and coastal walks

The main surf beach – Newquay

There are many great things to do in Newquay. As Newquay is one of the best spots for surfing in England, I highly suggest heading to Fistral beach. This is where you will find the best waves and skilled surfers. You can hire a board here or even take a lesson or two. The waves can be quite big so be careful if you are not a confident swimmer or surfer.

Newquay has many great coastal walks. Do consider walking to one of the nearby towns to enjoy the scenery and sunshine. You will have an amazing view of the seaside! Most of the walks are signposted to stop you from getting lost.

A popular thing to do in Newquay is to visit the Lappa Valley Steam Railway. The railway functions as a tourist attraction and has many great activities for people of all ages. Activities include canoeing, golf, nature walks, train rides and bird watching. There is also a licensed coffee café and a neat gift shop to purchase souvenirs. Tickets cost 12 GBP (18.50 USD) for adults and 9.50 GBP (13.50 USD) for children. Tickets allow you to participate in all activities for the whole day.

Local specialties

A traditional Pasty!

Beware of the Cornish cider! It tastes delicious but has a high alcohol content so will have you feeling dizzy in no time. Many of the best English ciders are produced in Cornwall and often factories offer tours for those who wish to learn more about the procedures. It is always hard to choose a cider flavour, as there are so many!

A traditional food you must try is the Cornish pasty. It is a baked pastry in the shape of a semi circle and filled with either meat or vegetables. They are absolutely delicious and can be bought for a very small price. You will find plenty of bakeries and cafés that sell pasties of all flavours in Newquay.

Recommended cafe and restaurant

The Ohana beach Café Outdoor Seating

A great café to check out is The Ohana Beach Cafe. It is situated on Cliff Road, and is only a short walk away from the beach. Here you will be find great coffee, delicious milkshakes and yummy food. The staff are amazing and the decorations are incredibly quirky. The menu consists of typical English food and also has special dishes for vegans and vegetarians. They cater for other dietary requirements too.

Another good restaurant to try is The Stable. Here they will serve you delicious pizza and local cider. It is located at Fistral Beach and overlooks the sea. It’s a great spot to watch the surfers and to simply enjoy being by the beach.

Keep an eye out for the seagulls. They are incredibly large and have no fear in stealing anything and everything they can get a hold of. You will find many of them throughout the town, especially down by the beach. Best to keep indoors when you are eating and drinking to stop these beasts from stealing your food!

Nightlife in Newquay

The Walkabout

Newquay has a great nightlife and you will often find many people enjoying their stag/hen dos here. In particular, I would suggest visiting the Walkabout, an Australian bar that has a big dance floor and offers cheap drinks.

Another great club to visit is Wetherspoons. It is always incredibly busy and is a good place to meet new people. Drinks are also quite cheap here. If you are after a more relaxed atmosphere, do consider The Red Lion, an old pub that overlooks the water.

Beach town with much to offer

Newquay is a great town with a lot to offer. You can either have an action packed holiday or simply enjoy relaxing by the beach.
