If you ever have the chance to visit Italy, Turin is one of the cities you must stop at. Unfortunate stereotypes maintain this city in the image of an industrial town without much charm, but I assure you that this is totally unfunded…On top of the rich architectural and cultural visits the city offers, the region boasts delicious and various food specialities. Although you can find delicious foods pretty much anywhere in Turin, I would like to introduce you to the most typical places to try out Piedmontese delicious foods.
Discover Piedmont delicatessen at "Trattoria alla Locandina"
For an amazing tasting plate of cheeses (Parmesan, Toma cheese…) and delicatessen, there is no better place than “Trattoria alla Locandina” via Montebello. The restaurant looks like a wine cellar; the food is cooked on demand, so you usually have to wait a little before being served, but it is really worth it. There, you can also taste one of the best mushroom risottos (or “risotto ai funghi”) I have ever tasted.
The restaurant is well located as it is in the city centre, only 1 min from the Mole Antonelliana, the architectural symbol of Turin, which hosts the cinema museum. In this restaurant the risotto will cost you around 12 EUR (13.2 USD).The delicatessen plate has an unfixed cost, as it is completely customizable and is made on demand.
Taste the delicious local chocolate "Gianduja"
The “Gianduja” is a typical Piedmontese chocolate. It is a really sweet spread that contains hazelnut and looks like praline, although it is more creamy and soft. The “Nutella” hazelnut chocolate paste’s ever-popular taste takes its roots in “Gianduja”, as the Ferrero company originates from Piedmont region.
You cannot leave Turin without eating a “Gianduja” ice cream, which is in my opinion the best ice cream flavour in the world. On a sunny day I advise you to have a walk on Piazza Vittorio Veneto and take a stop at the “Rivareno Gelateria”. The best ice cream flavours are “Gianduja” of course, but also “Fior di latte” (a type of fresh cheese that tastes like creamy yogurt) and pistachio (a small cup, with two flavours, will cost you 2.5 EUR, that is to say 2.7 USD).
Have a creamy "Bicerin" during freezing cold days
The “Bicerin” is a Piedmont typical drink from Turin; it is a mix of espresso coffee, hot chocolate and cream on the top. This is a perfect drink to keep you warm and comfy, even in the coldest days! If you want to stay authentic, you should taste the Bicerin in one of the historic cafes of the city centre such as “Baratti & Milano” or “Al Bicerin”, this will cost you around 5 EUR (about 5.5 USD).
**Get the fundamentals right at Eataly**
Eataly is an Italian marketplace, which is famous worldwide: it offers a large variety of Italian food and drinking in a myriad of little restaurants, such as pizza, pasta, fish, meat, ice cream, cheese, and wine. Although Eataly is now present in many other cities and countries, it originates in Turin, Lingotto area to be precise. In this place there are open-plan living kitchens, so you can see the chefs cooking. Do make sure to go early because this megastore is famous, and gets really crowded at lunch and dinner times. A basic meal including pasta or pizza, water and bread will cost you from 8 to 12 EUR (that is to say 8.8 to 13.2 USD).
Piedmont region is the perfect place for food lovers!
If, like me, you are a food lover who cannot simply have a sandwich for lunch, Piedmont is made for you! Here you can find delicious tasty food for a really affordable price, and there is nothing better than a greedy stroll to visit a lovely city such as Turin. Gourmet breaks are, in my opinion, the best way to discover a city; it allows you to discover a culture while enjoying savoury flavours. Food is a really important part of culture, it determines who we are. A famous French adage says: “Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are”.
