Bringing a variety of diverse and fantastic places to eat in Mombasa, it’s now time that I share the delectable, well-known and popular Cafesserie, which is located on the ground floor of City Mall, Nyali, with you. It is a magnanimous restaurant, bakery, ice-cream parlour and coffee house with a licensed bar that serves up breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and any snacks that you need in between. It’s the type of place that you can stay all day and evening (and possibly one such place that you will want to due to the location, décor, food and the quality of the overall experience that you will enjoy). Filled with locals, expats and tourists, it’s a thriving, European style café that represents the sophisticated and grand offerings in Vienna and Paris with an African twist.

An abundance of seating available

Overall, Cafesserie is airy, spacious and spotlessly clean and has an ambiance that is modern and chic, with background music playing melancholic tunes throughout the entire establishment. Passers by always peek in and especially find it hard to resist the heavenly bakery that is at the side of Cafesserie. The bakery sells artisan breads and pastries in abundance; there is nowhere quite like the Cafesserie bakery in Mombasa. To enjoy these items, you can essentially purchase them from the counter and do not necessarily need to sit inside; however, I would have to recommend that you go inside as this place is seriously one of the best places to relax and eat in Mombasa.

With both indoor and outdoor seating available as well as various seating arrangements and types of furniture, you know that you will be comfortable in this very splendid location. The outdoors area is a smoking zone and has an open concept, whereby you can see passers by of the entire complex. There are ceiling fans and beautiful plants and greenery dotted around in both the seating areas to make sure that you feel cool and enjoy your time in this wonderful establishment. There is free Wi-Fi, which is of an average strength, available for those that visit.

Heavenly hot and cold drinks

Locals, expats and tourists often visit to enjoy both hot and cold drinks on offer at Cafesserie. Once you’re inside, the aroma of the coffee will certainly hit you and I can guarantee you that you won’t be able to leave without trying it. The cost of a single espresso is 140 KSH (1 USD), a cappuccino is 190 KSH (2 USD), a latte is 190 KSH (2 USD), a macchiato is 150 KSH (1 USD) and an Americano is 150 KSH (1 USD). If you have a sweeter tooth, try the hot chocolate for 250 KSH (2 USD) or the Kenyan tea for 150 KSH (1 USD) is recommended.

Alternatively, if you need a drink to help cool you down, then Cafessere is the best place to be because of the abundance of iced drinks, milkshakes and fresh juices available. I would have to urge you to try the iced tea for 190 KSH (2 USD) or the lemon and mint fresh juice for 280 KSH (3 USD). There is nothing better to recharge your batteries and give you that refreshing and energising vibe than a cold drink at Cafesserie! This is especially true if you’re interested in perusing around City Mall afterwards and doing some shopping in the local stores or at the large and popular Nakumatt, which is located within the complex too.

Snacks with one-of-a-kind chutneys

With respect to the food, Cafesserie has a vast gourmet menu that you can choose from, ranging from small snacks to full meals. I would have to urge you to try the freshly baked nano bread, which is served piping hot and is accompanied by Cafesserie’s signature chutneys, namely a corridor with green chillies and a tomato salsa with a spicy twist. This costs approximately 250 KSH (2 USD). In addition, the pies, which cost 190 KSH (2 USD) are definitely recommended. The shape of the pie is more triangular rather than the circular pie and would be comparable to a hot pasty in Europe. The pastry of Cafesserie’s pie is buttery and fluffy and there is the option of having a filling of cheese, chicken or meat. I don’t think I know a single person that has tried a pie here and has simply not loved it. I would suggest that you also ask for the chutneys to accompany your pie to give it some extra flavour and heat!

Absolutely gorgeous and delicious salads

If you fancy eating something more than a snack, then I would have to recommend that you try the scrumptious dishes on offer at Cafesserie. They are a wonderful contrast to perhaps the more indulgent options available at the restaurants and hotels on the North Coast of Mombasa and are only a short distance away from the coast. Every dish that I have eaten at Cafesserie has been prepared to the highest standards in respect to taste and presentation. The food at Cafesserie very much easily rivals all other top restaurants in Kenya and I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed if you follow my recommendation. The Roquefort and pear salad which consists of tangy Roquefort blue cheese, crunchy nuts, lettuce, rocket and sliced pear is possibly one of the best salads that I have ever had in my life; the cost is a very reasonable 720 KSH (7 USD).

The caprese and avocado salad, which is served with pesto and hot focaccia is also absolutely gorgeous and only costs 720 KSH (7 USD). The finely diced Greek salad, which consisted of onion, tomatoes, cucumber, black olives, rocket and a salty and creamy feta cheese is to die for and costs 720 KSH (7 USD). This dish is also served with a side of hot focaccia. Each mouthful of all the salads that I have shared with you are delicious and you can really taste the freshness of each and every ingredient. Please do note that there are also many other continental dishes available at Cafesserie including pasta, pizza and burgers, all of which are wonderfully tasty; however, my favourite has to be the healthy salads and I would urge you to head on over to Cafesserie to enjoy them. If you’re a skeptic of healthy food being able to taste good, then you will certainly be wow-ed by the salads available at this delectable eatery.

Heart content and stomach satisfied

Having visited Cafesserie from when it opened many years ago and having returned to it on every occasion that I visit Mombasa, you must get the feeling that this place is something quite special. Every time I leave this place, my heart is content and my stomach is fully satisfied and I have to tell you to go here (and I’m sure you will thank me once you do). It offers good value, tasty and healthy food, friendly wait staff and has an eclectic and loyal customer base (which are you are likely to soon join if you’re a local to Mombasa). If you’re a tourist staying on the North Coast of Mombasa, you are certainly recommended to book a taxi with your hotel and take the short drive to City Mall to check out and enjoy Cafesserie during your holiday. If you visit on certain days of the week, there is also an open air African market that sells authentic Swahili souvenirs including carvings, wrap around cloths and jewellery in the car park area of the City Mall complex.
