Tip from tour guide
Planning to stay at this property for your Bruges holiday? Be sure to visit Huiz Perez de Malvenda, a short 10-minute ride away from here. When travellers visit Bruges, they always admire this beautiful 15th-16th century Gothic house from the Rozenhoedkaai. It is commonly known as “The House of Perez de Malvenda”. Juan Perez de Malvenda (or Maluenda) was an alderman, mayor of Bruges, and an important patron of the city’s heritage. Here are some curiosities about his life:
1. Actually, that house belonged to his brother-in-law, Jacob de Chantraines. So… it should actually be called “The House of Chantraines.”
2. His father, Diego, moved from Burgos (Spain) to Bruges as a consul. Juan was therefore born in Bruges.
3. His brother, Antoine, was a canon of the now-destroyed cathedral of St. Donatian.
4. At a difficult time during the war of religions, Bruges had a largely Calvinist city council (1578). In order to save the famous relic of the Holy Blood, Juan collected the relic from the church of St. Basil, put it in several boxes, and buried it in the garden of his house. Six years later, when Bruges came under Spanish rule, he returned the relic to the bishop of the city.
5. He did not remain a Spanish citizen, as he preferred to be legally considered a citizen of Bruges.
