Stepping into the Intercontinental Barclay Hotel in New York City is a show stopper. Originally built by Harold Vanderbilt of the famous railroad family, this hotel has always been New York City’s gem.

The lobby is larger and grander than most hotels of this class. The original skylight is now lit by artificial lighting but still casts a warm light on the lobby’s marble tiled flooring. To your left is the Gin Bar where upscale meals and libations are served throughout the day and evening. To your right is the reception area where you will start your luxurious stay.

Recent renovations shine brightly

Deluxe room at the Barclay

Although the hotel’s recent renovations make it shine as it must have when opened in 1926, the price for a room is reasonable. The starting point for luxury begins with the Superior Room. A spacious 250 sq. ft/24 sq. m will await your arrival. Each room features a well-designed foyer, custom designed furniture, mural artwork reminiscent of the Hudson River School, custom Anichini bedding, large flat screen TV, and a sparkling classic bathroom. A recent check of pricing showed a one night stay for a Friday arrival in May to cost only 269 USD + taxes and fees.

Stepping up a few levels of the Intercontinental Barclay room choices is the Executive Room. This larger room comes in at 300 sq. ft./28 sq meters and costs 321 USD + taxes and fees. If that’s not enough space then consider a One Bedroom Deluxe Suite and 500 sq ft/47 sq m of New York City luxury. Lavish marble floors in the bathrooms are heated, and the living area has a fireplace for romantic evenings. Choose from a king size or queen size bed and sleep like a baby in the lap of luxury. The price for this level of comfort is 517 USD + taxes and fees.

Stay on top of the world

Incredible Penthouse

Recent renovations included a Presidential Suite on the top of the building where stunning views of the Chrysler Building stand before you. The suite is over-the-top luxury and features 3,000 sq ft/278 sq m of living space. Two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms are furnished in the finest furniture and linens. There is a dining room where you can entertain guests and an outdoor terrace to enjoy the priceless views. This is for the ultra-rich with a price tag of 25,000 USD per night! Something to consider for a future stay should you luck out and win a big lottery prize.

A taste of the Big Apple

Octopus at Socorrat Tapas

Be forewarned, many of the rooms in the lower price range won’t have much of a view. If your room doesn’t have views, who cares! You are in New York City and the whole city is at your doorstep. Staying at this prestigious address puts you close to much of what the Big Apple has to offer. Rockefeller Center is about a ten minute walk away as is Grand Central Terminal. Shopping along Park Avenue or Fifth Avenue is also a short walk away.

Dozens of excellent restaurants are very close by like Avra, just a two minute walk, serves some of the best Mediterranean fare in New York. For quick and casual meals and snacks, right across the street is Ashley Marketplace and Café. If you like tapas and Spanish food, try Socarrat Paella Bar for great food and wine. For the absolute best in fine dining, a ten minute taxi ride will take you to Daniel, a two star Michelin restaurant serving French cuisine in a lavish dining room.

If you are looking for activities and Broadway reservations, the concierge staff at the Intercontinental Barclay is one of the best in the city. To save time and headaches, be sure to call them before arrival to set up entertainment and dining reservations.

It all adds up to luxury

When you add it all up, great location, excellent service, spacious rooms, and affordable pricing, the Intercontinental New York Barclay should be your choice of affordable luxury.
