Rajasthan, for all its magnificence and glory, is truly one of India’s gems. The land is home to majestic palaces and impressive forts, scenic gardens, and an all-encompassing folk tradition, colouring the state’s history as vivaciously as possible. Furthering its reputation and tourism appeal are forts and townships that are considered haunted and doused in mystery. Kuldhara Village, about 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) west of Jaisalmer, is one such abandoned village. It was once a prosperous township, but all that remains now are ruins and relics of a time long gone. Local legends claim that the reason why the town never flourished after it was deserted was due to a curse its former inhabitants had laid on the town. Those who did try to debunk this, experienced paranormal activities, thus making it a popular tourist destination. Here’s a guide to Kuldhara Village, Rajasthan that will give you all the essential information you’ll need to have an awesome time here.

Tour through the remains

The village welcomes its visitors with a grand, arched entrance, which leads into the ruins of the township amidst Rajasthan’s sand dunes. You’ll find several buildings, amongst which some are utterly dilapidated, while the others have been restored by the efforts of the Indian government. Visitor entry is about 0.15 USD per person and about 1 USD if you want to take your vehicle.

Get chatting with the locals

You’ll encounter locals hanging around. Just stop by and engage in a friendly chat with any of them. They’re used to seeing quite a bit of tourist footfall, so happily divulge details and local knowledge about Kuldhara Village. Although, the village remains largely devoid of people, which adds to the eerie feels that abound the airs here.

Check out the architecture

Buildings here, from the erstwhile township, also exhibit fine architectural styles. You can walk into any of the fairly intact structures and check these out for yourself. Steep wells, wide roads, temples, and residential premises (huts or cottages) are proof that Kuldhara was once a flourishing township.

Hitch a nearby dunes' safari

Kuldhara Village falls en route the famous Sam Sand Dunes, so if you’re done touring through the village earlier than expected, you can head forth to check out the amazing sand dunes. While here, you can hitch camel rides, camp your time away, or go in for a car safari tour. Sam Sand Dunes Desert Safari Camp offers exceptional packages and services so remember to explore that.

Unwind at nearby resorts

If you think the excursion’s got you tired, Club Mahindra Jaisalmer Resort and Suryagarh Palace are both luxury properties, located at about half an hour to 45 minutes’ distance from Kuldhara Village. You can check into one of these properties and enjoy some laidback chilling or just drop by and make use of some of their facilities, such as the spa and restaurants.

Entry restrictions

Owing to paranormal activities, visitors are strictly prohibited from staying in the village after 6pm. It’s best you time your visit well in time to enjoy everything at ease. Although, there are some supervised overnight tours that are organized and these restrictions do not apply there.

Choose the right time

While here, you’ll essentially be outdoors, in a desert. It’s best you avoid outings to Kuldhara Village in summers to ensure minimal exposure to the heat and illnesses. October to March are probably the best months to enjoy walking around and exploring.

Beware of hearsay

While all stories about Kuldhara Village are essentially hearsay, quite a few may even be exaggerated and untrue. You’re advised to take everything that the locals tell with a pinch of salt.

Watch out while exploring

While there are some permanent roads in the village, most of the area is just sand. Be careful of the wet sand and desert puddles while walking around, especially if you’re visiting during the monsoon months (August to October).
