Dulwich Picture Gallery is the oldest public art gallery in England and the first building designed in the early 19th century with the express purpose of becoming a major public art gallery. The intent has managed to perfection! The gallery is not only a major destination for art lovers but also an architectural masterpiece to visit and explore.

Painting on hand ... but for a small fee!

The admission price at Dulwich Picture Gallery varies depending on the collection you want to visit, and swings from 6 GBP (approximately 8 USD) for the permanent collection only, to 14 GBP (approximately 21 USD) for both temporary exhibitions - which often offer the opportunity to see rare artworks by great internationally known painters - and the permanent collection.

The gallery space is illuminated by a series of glass domes that let natural light come inside and gently rest on the canvas with an indirect touch, so as to give the observer a perfect view of the shapes and colours of the paintings. The technique was invented and tested for the first time by architect Sir John Soane who, throughout his career, became interested in the relationship between light and architecture and how the two combine into a spatial whole. The central gallery is characterised by dark red walls that envelop the visitor on a journey that spans from baroque paintings - French, Italian and Spanish - to British portraits from Tudor era to the more recent 19th century.

Want to try? Draw yourself a masterpiece.

If you are an art lover and the places you visit inspire your creativity, Dulwich Picture Gallery is the right place to find the aura that immerses yourself into real Art; but if you aim at a more compelling experience, the numerous workshops held by experienced teachers for adults but also for children, are definitely something that you should not miss. In one wing of the gallery, equipped with tables and chairs and all the material you need to invent and experiment with your own hands, there is a space in which you can learn drawing and painting techniques, methods and tricks used by the great masters, so that you can freely practice the theories learned and participate in a more engaging artistic experience.

Why is the gallery so important in London?

Dulwich Picture Gallery is located in a wealthy neighbourhood in south London within easy reach of London Victoria, that is to say central London. Only 15 minutes by train to West Dulwich and a pleasant 10 minutes walk can get you effortless to the gallery. If time allows, it is worth prolonging the visit to admire the green areas surrounding the gallery, a building built by British architect Sir John Soane (1753-1837), one of the most important characters in the history of English architecture.

A visit to the gallery is the best way to admire the sensitive and refined combination of art and architecture.

Time for a tea break!

The visit to the gallery is not only a good way to appreciate the works of great masters of art such as Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn and his remarkable ‘Girl at a Window’ (1645), but also a good moment to stop and enjoy a coffee or an English-style tea with the taste of Art.

A small cafe overlooking the park offers time to appreciate the atmosphere of the gallery and enjoy a wide selection of hot drinks and cakes before continuing the visit to the collection; but if your day has already been very busy, why not to stay for lunch and share a glass of wine with your lovers? Children would love running around in the grass while you take a rest!

London Tour Guide

Robert Woolf

I am a London tour guide and my tours include talking about people who have shaped the city plus the many connected places such as Hampton Court Palace, The Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, the commercial centre of the city: the City of London, and London’s world class museums and galleries. I have been guiding for 12 years. I am a licenced London Blue Badge Tour Guide, a City of London Guide, and a Westminster Guide. The reviews I receive from clients speak of their enjoyment from the local knowledge and the humour I bring to my tours. Born within sight of Hampton Court Palace, I am a Londoner and apart from 2 years in the Middle East, I have worked in this capital city all my business and tour guiding careers. I have travelled widely and I appreciate what appeals to visitors coming to London. I can tailor my tours to interest children. I guide couples, families and larger tour groups. I particularly enjoy visits to Westminster Abbey, where I also volunteer guiding students and children through its wonderful interior – on my tours you will hear about monarchs, why scientists and poets are remembered, the architecture and religious history. The Abbey is the story of England. Come on an engaging and fun tour with me. There is so much to show you !
