If you are a travel-guru enthusiastic about exotic places located off the beaten path, such as the Balkan Peninsula, mark Bulgaria on your bucket list. The country offers fantastic landscapes and sights that backpackers can visit while on a low budget of less than 20 dollars per day, including accommodation. Located in the Heart of the Sofia City Centre, Nightingale Hostel offers great values for individuals, especially backpackers, traveling on a low budget in the Balkans. In this article, I will guide you through a virtual tour of the Nightingale Hostel in the lovely capital of Bulgaria.

Accommodation ranges from spacious 8 bed mixed dorms, to private double rooms (all with large beds 2x1 metre/3x6 ft), where when available you can have the option of a private bathroom. All rooms can be booked as private rooms at an additional cost. I booked my stay in the 8-bed mixed dorm for only about 5 EUR (10 LEV or 6 USD) per night, excluding a few euros for the key deposit which they will give you back at the end of the stay. Their offer also includes a free continental breakfast (choice of cereals/meats, cheese/toast, and preserves/tea/coffee)

The spot-on location makes it easier for you to explore Sofia

Lying on the Petko R. Slaveykov Square, Nightingale Hostel is close to all the main attractions of Sofia, including the Saint Alexander Nevski Cathedral (8 minutes away on foot) and Vitosha (a 10 minute walk away) - the most important and main shopping street in Sofia. From the Palace of Justice, or the Sofia Courthouse, in the beginning of Vitosha, you can take a free walking tour around the city, starting everyday at 11AM and 6PM. The Krystal Garden is also about 10 minutes away on foot, and this is where the Free Balkan Bites Food Tour of Sofia starts everyday between 2PM and 4PM. During the tour, you will have a chance to taste different sorts of dishes: from soups and sandwiches to traditional wine and cheeses in 5 restaurants around the city centre. And all that’s for free! In the area around the hostel, there are several bars, restaurants, supermarkets, and kiosks which you can easily find at your doorstep.

Decent facilities will keep you comfortable while traveling

There are lots of extra facilities in the hostel for added value, including free sheets and blankets, self catering kitchen, lockers in the dorms, an iron, hair dryer, towels, and free broadband Wi-Fi plus 4 PC stations with printing and copying. The washing machine can also be used by guests for a few pennies.

Good atmosphere

Guests staying at the Nightingale Hostel are international people of different age ranges. It’s not a party hostel, but the atmosphere can be very relaxed and fun if you are open to interacting with other travellers. The receptionist sometimes cook dinner for guests, and you can voluntarily leave a small tip on the table after enjoying it. During my stay, the receptionist was remarkably friendly and welcoming. He even gave me a small souvenir when I checked out, so I can keep some a piece to remind me of the good memories for when I leave Sofia.
