The town of Wigan is located close to Manchester and sits on the River Douglas. Historically, Wigan was in the territory occupied by people known as the “Brigantes”, an ancient Celtic tribe who ruled much of northern England. During the Industrial Revolution, Wigan underwent an enormous growth in population. Porcelain and clock making were major industries in the town but coal mining was also extensive.
The town of Wigan has also been immortalized by George Orwell, in his book, “The Road to Wigan Pier”, which deals with the living conditions of the working class during the 1930’s. Wigan Pier is still standing here today and used to be used as a wharf. Although located near Manchester, Wigan has its own landmarks and history worth visiting, such as parks, museums and various landmarks. If you’re a sports fan, there’s no shortage of rugby or football, either!
So, if you’re here for a quaint little visit or you’re looking for a quiet spot, outside of Manchester, here are some of the best spots to stay in Wigan.
