Amago no Sato is a small inn tucked away in the mountains of Ehime Prefecture’s Ozushi City. You can even enjoy some fishing for this rare trout in the pond next to the inn.

Amago no Sato, an inn deep in the mountains

Deep in the mountains of Ehime is the inn Amago no Sato. So deep in the mountains that you start doubting that its farther up and worry that you passed it and almost turn around. That’s about the time when you finally arrive here, a place secluded from the rest of the world.

But because it’s secluded like this it is very quiet, and the air is clean as is the water. So clean that in the river that runs next to it watercress naturally grows. Suffice it to say at night all you can do is sit and sigh at how beautiful the starry sky is here.

Fishing for Amago trout!

Next to the inn there is a fishing pond where many Amago trout are being farmed. By the way Amago look very similar to Yamame trout but are characterized by the red dots that speckle the Amagos body. It is a river fish in the salmon family.

That Amago trout is what is for dinner, but if you prefer you can fish for your dinner as well which is part of the allure of this inn. Depending on the menu the staff will tell you how many to catch. The rental rod, bait and fishing is all free to enjoy. If you are new to fishing they teach you in detail how to catch so there are no worries. (If you don’t want to fish or aren’t able to catch the number they ask for they will still provide the fish so you don’t have to worry about that either.)

A dinner full of Amago trout dishes

The well anticipated dinner. With the standard plan of one night and two meals, dinner consists of pickles, sweetened boiled fish, sashimi, fried fish with breadcrumbs, and salted grilled fish. As pictured above you can also get deep-fried fish marinated in a spicy sauce added. They can also serve fried fish in corn starch, a sort of rice trout stew called zousui, so you can have Amago trout in every way you can really imagine to fulfil you desires. Amago trout doesn’t have a fishy smell and doesn’t have any gaminess to it so you can enjoy it in many different ways of preparation.

The sweetened boiled fish here is recognized by Ozushi city in their “Ozu Eemon Selection” (Ozu delicious food selection) as being a great dish. After grilling the Amago trout over high grade charcoal they boil it in home grown coarse tea, they then add soy sauce and honey for flavor. Because of the tea the bones are soft and you can eat every part of the fish from head to tail. Also, you can rest assured that this dish has no chemical additives. When vacuum sealed you can store this dish in room temperature for 3 months so buying some as gifts might be a good idea.

Salted and grilled Amago trout!

Here is the salted and grilled Amago trout! One whole fish is served to each person. Is this the one that I just caught? The thought runs through my mind. The male and female have a different texture and taste so if you prefer one tell them before hand.

And of course this dish is grilled on high end charcoal. You can ask the head proprietress anything you want about Amago trout while you enjoy your dinner!

A spacious room to really relax

After dinner you can head back to your room to really just relax and chill out. The room and dining area are separate so after dinner you don’t have to wait for anyone to clean up. There is a separate sleeping room from the room pictured above so you can see it’s very spacious here.

Depending on what time you arrive at the inn you can have a bath before or after dinner which they boil the water with firewood. The softness of the water is just the icing on the cake to really reenergize you while relaxing.

In closing

Although it isn’t easy to get to, being so deep in the mountains, Amago no Sato is worth the trip for its quietness and being surrounded by nature. Their capacity only allows 3 couples at most but their level of cuisine is absolutely top tier. A visit here at Amago no Sato to taste the clear air and dine on some of the best food around is highly recommended!
