In the north of Okinawa island is the Yanbaru province’s Kunigamison. The northernmost part of that area is called “Oku” (the depths), here you can stay in a very rich Okinawan experience. That is a B&B called Miyagi. Okinawa island is actually not very big, and getting here from central Naha only takes about 3 hours by car., and you can enjoy the local cuisine, live on island time and talk with the locals, and it is the perfect place to really experience the deepest parts, the true part of Okinawa.
A clean and chic twin bed room
Not a particularly large room but cleaned to perfection and with the interior brought together without fanfare but chic nonetheless. The atmosphere here is relaxing and not straining to be so. The shelves to hang your clothes and to put your belongings on were hand built by the owner. There is an instinctive warmth to these kinds of touches.
From the sweep window you can come out to a small veranda, and next to that is a bathroom and shower shared with the room next door (there is a separate one for other rooms.). There is a washing machine which you can use anytime, perfect for those staying longer than usual. You can dry your clothes on the veranda with the Okinawan breeze.
There are 6 rooms in total with one being a tatami room which a family of 4 can stay at.
Live on Okinawan time on the deck
The B&B is located amongst trees, and you can lounge around on the deck living on Okinawan Island time relaxing. A multiple night stay with one of the days just doing nothing on the deck but sipping coffee and kicking up your feet is a must.
Bathe in hot water softly warmed by firewood
Next to the room is a shower but there is also a bath for the family made in stone. The hot water here is warmed by firewood that the owner sets and maintains. Because of this the water has a very gentle warmth to it. It truly warms you to the core. Okinawa has very few onsen hot spring baths but this is just as good as any onsen!
Dinner prepped by the owner full of traditional Okinawan fare!
Dinner cooked by the owner is a definite centerpiece of the stay here. The menu seems to change with seasons and even by day, such as Okinawan pickled onion, Tebichi, and Soki which is Okinawan style stewed pork spare ribs, as well as more standard things like salad, yakisoba, all of which fill the table.
All of which is absolutely delicious! The owner says he never went to cooking school or anything; this may be the reason why he can come up with his own unique flavors that are so good. It is set up as a buffet so you can fill yourself to where you are just about to burst at the seams.
Gather at the fireplace after dinner
I’ve been mentioning the owner several times so far, actually when this man has a superbly unique individuality. This place is only made special because of his personality, and that is no overstatement.
After dinner all the guests actually surround the owner and the fireplace for a gathering. Everyone just brings what they want to eat or drink and it naturally just starts off.
The life of the party is definitely the owner. A performer in the truest sense of the word. He may have his quirks but that adds to his character. Because the B&b isn’t large, the gathering kind of changes with the mix guests each time but I am sure it’s fun every time.
In closing
Great room! Great environment! Great food! Fascinating owner!! Guests aren’t just from the mainland, but there are many who are native to Okinawa who stay here repeatedly. There are many who are possessed by this place the owner included.
