Sikkim emerged as the world’s first completely organic state in 2016. The goal was not only to achieve a healthier lifestyle for its people, but to preserve the fertile environment and delicate ecosystem. Toward that aim, Sikkim stopped the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in 2003. Farmers were educated and trained to produce their crops organically and compost pits were established throughout Sikkim, including Gangtok.

Currently, every section of the 187,800 acres (76,000 hectares) of agricultural farmland in the area is considered certified organic. Needless to say, any imports or use of chemicals is strictly banned in Sikkim. As a result of these concentrated efforts, there’s an increase in wildlife and the bee population is flourishing, too.
